Mount Vernon Family Therapy Associates LLC is offering five psycho-educational groups new to the Alexandria area. Each one is carefully designed to reflect their mission: to help people love and thrive. Dates, times and fees are posted at http://MountVernonTherapy.com. Enrollment is limited to 8 or 9 participants.
"Forgiveness Skills" features a topic growing in interest around the country. How can people forgive instead of holding grudges and resentments? It takes work, and new skills, not just good intentions. The benefits are clear: improved sleep, sense of well-being, and even lower blood pressure. Rosemary Lewis, Licensed Profession Counselor says, "You will learn techniques to take with you; it's really a life long learning."
She also is leading "Reflective Writing: Journaling, Affirmations and Letter Writing", which are tools for personal growth. Specific journaling styles can have powerful effects of healing and self-discovery. This workshop, she says, is useful for people to deepen therapy or self-exploration they are already doing.
Many women find themselves "collapsing" into relationships, and they give up too much of themselves. They may drop hobbies or friends to please a new partner. In six hours over two evenings, Kathi Scholz Fertig, MA, Resident in Counseling, will guide women through exercises designed to strengthen their self-esteem and ability to define themselves. "Loving Him without Losing You" will also explore the differences between men's and women's relationship needs and wants.
Ms. Fertig also offers a rare opportunity: sex education for grown women. Her "Women's Sexuality Seminar" will explore in a small and confidential setting, women's arousal, and what sex means for women. She promises "your questions will be answered!"
Rounding out the groups, Maria Anastasiou, MS, and Kristin Rosenthal, LPC, will help parents learn the five steps to emotional coaching for parents, in their innovative workshop, "Tools for Successful Parenting." Research has highlighted the advantages of learning emotional intelligence early in life, and this workshop will focus on ways parents can help their children use their emotions for connection, and successful friendships.
