Lakeside Christian School, which has been providing spiritual and academic training to students from kindergarten through high school since its founding in 1975, has a new Web site that informs parents of the school's Christian-based Learning Solutions Programs.
"I believe Christian schools should provide both a spiritual and educational response that meets the needs inherent in the community they serve," said Jim Jensen, Lakeside Christian's administrator. "Lakeside's Learning Solutions Programs address needs reflective of our local student population. Our community includes learners who are in the spectrum between advanced and struggling. For over 30 years, Lakeside has provided a program for advanced learners. Our Learning Solutions Programs enhance that effort and also provide opportunity for struggling students to receive the same high-quality education."
The Learning Solutions Programs available for the 2009-2010 school year are:
*-Academic Coach Program: This helps middle and high school students prepare better for college by assigning an Academic Coach to provide weekly homework help, test prep, organizational skills and tutoring. Working with a small group of students, this qualified teacher is a support system for the student while also an advocate for the parent in need of additional help with a child. The benefits of this over a private tutor are cost and an in-school structure.
*-Home School Partnerships Program: This provides parents of home-schooled children the opportunity to fill potential gaps in academics and extra-curricular activities. Services include standardized testing; middle and high school academic courses; transcript maintenance; academic diagnostic testing; learning disability resources; Florida High School Athletic Association and Florida Christian Association of Private and Parochial Schools team sports; arts, drama and more. In addition, the Home School Program allows a parent to only choose one course annually yet have their child receive all the other complimentary services such as sports or access to laboratory sciences.
*-Reading Intervention Program: For children who have fallen behind more than a grade in their reading level, Lakeside Christian School offers this Rx for Reading Program from the National Institute for Learning Development (NILD). The school has been accredited as a "Program of Excellence" by the NILD and it staff members trained by it.
*-Specific Interventions Program: Some students have a legitimate learning issue but one that is not severe enough to qualify for learning disability programs. This NILD Therapy Program is geared to those students.
"Students struggle for a variety of reasons: learning disabilities, missing prior learning, poor organizational or study skills, severe teasing or problems at home," Jensen said. "Our Learning Solutions Programs apply an integrated approach and provide a targeted response. Parents often seek disconnected remedies for their student's struggles between their current school and outside programs. Lakeside's integrated learning programs provide individual solutions combined with a rich classroom experience. When learning struggles are reflective of difficult life situations, on-site Youth Pastors and staff are available to assist and mentor our students."
Lakeside Christian School accepts McKay Scholarships and Florida Pride Scholarships to help cover cost of tuition and Learning Solutions Programs. The school accepts the Pride Scholarship to cover the tuition in full despite it not covering all operating costs.
"That's just one of the ways we serve the Clearwater community," Jensen said. "Lakeside Learning Solutions is our mission and ministry response to our community to provide a quality Christian education for a broad range of learners."
Lakeside Christian School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Association of Christian Schools International, and NILD. The school is a ministry of Lakeside Community Chapel, and its Youth Ministry is integrated into the school with Youth Pastors on site daily. Lakeside offers a Christian school environment for Pinellas County students K-12, and thus an educational option for an entire family.
