China is the largest developing country among world economies and as such represents an attractive revenue opportunity for major printer vendors. Lyra Research's China Market Advisory Service has just released two insightful reports--the China Ink Jet Printer and MFP Forecast and the China Laser Printer and MFP Forecast--that break down the opportunities for digital imaging vendors in this emerging market. The forecast reports focus on: the current ink jet and laser printer market, with profiles of major vendors and their strategies; device shipments, revenue, and average sale price numbers; the supplies opportunity; and total ink jet and laser revenue forecasts.

China is the largest developing country among world economies and as such represents an attractive revenue opportunity for major printer vendors. Lyra Research's China Market Advisory Service (http://www.lyra.com/lh3m.nsf/AdvisoryServices/CMAS) has just released two insightful reports--the China Ink Jet Printer and MFP Forecast and the China Laser Printer and MFP Forecast--that break down the opportunities for digital imaging vendors in this emerging market.

The forecast reports, which cover the years 2005 through 2012, focus on the following:
·    the current ink jet and laser printer market, with profiles of major vendors and their strategies;
·    device shipments, revenue, and average sale price numbers;
·    the supplies opportunity (printer installed base, average monthly print-volume estimates (AMPVs), total page volumes and media output, and cartridge usage figures); and
·    total ink jet and laser revenue forecasts.

Insight into the China Ink Jet Printer and MFP Market
The Chinese ink jet printer market is highly competitive, with several well-established international vendors locked in a heated battle for dominance. Industrial regions such as North America and Western Europe are maturing, and vendors are looking for market opportunities in emerging markets such as China. As shown in the figure titled, "Market Share for Ink Printers and MFPs in China, 2007, " HP remains the leader in the Chinese ink jet market, with 42 percent market share and strong offerings in all segments. Because HP entered the Chinese market early, and because of its strong reputation in worldwide corporate markets, the company has maintained its overall market-share leadership. However, Epson and Canon are making strong bids in China. Lenovo's sales of Lexmark OEM ink jets have dropped off considerably to about 7 percent. Dell and Brother have smaller market shares because both are recent entrants into the Chinese market, but they are working to increase their presence in this market. While sales of general-purpose Deskjet printers remain a staple of the business, sales of MFPs are growing rapidly. Photosmart photo-specialty printers are also gaining ground as digital photography takes hold in China. Insight into the China Laser Printer and MFP Market
Because China represents a major opportunity, virtually all vendors that are active in the worldwide laser printer market have some sort of presence in the country. However, the Chinese laser printer market is somewhat different than the market in other countries due to domestic players that are unique to China. As shown in the figure titled, "Market Share for Laser Printers and MFP Shipments in China, 2007," HP is the market leader, with 45 percent of total unit shipments in China. This is similar to its worldwide market share. Samsung is continuing to grow as a vendor in the Chinese laser printer market. It has 20 percent unit share and a strong product lineup of low-end monochrome printers and MFPs. Lenovo, the leading domestic PC company, slipped to third place in the market. Brother, Canon, Epson, Fuji Xerox and Konica Minolta comprise a second tier of vendors, each with unit shares of 2 to 5 percent of the market. The leading vendors all have a very strong presence in the personal printer and personal MFP segments, while second-tier vendors such as Canon and Fuji Xerox are stronger in the higher-end office segments. Moving forward, these vendors will be battling for customers in the smaller, lower-income, and more remote cities of China where PC penetration rates are low since the "low-hanging fruit" from the larger cities in China has already been picked. Commenting on the overall printer market in China, Jiqiang Rong, Lyra's director of primary research, says, "Competition is heated among major printer vendors in China and is likely to intensify as the country's economy continues to develop. China is a significant target for growth. Vendors are beginning to understand the need for more sophisticated product development and marketing strategies, designing products specifically to meet the needs of this market and other emerging markets rather than using products developed for the more industrialized countries such as North America, Western Europe, and Japan. The challenges to profitability still remain huge but our forecast reports feature insight and analysis to help printer vendors plan and devise the appropriate strategies for future market success."
