More Government Squeeze On Road Users

Wide-ranging proposals intended to dramatically reduce the number of deaths on the roads were announced by Jim Fitzpatrick, the Road Safety Minister, in April, when he also confirmed a major overhaul of the driver training and testing process.

Flint, United Kingdom (PRWEB) April 29, 2009 -- Wide-ranging proposals intended to dramatically reduce the number of deaths on the roads were announced by Jim Fitzpatrick, the Road Safety Minister, in April, when he also confirmed a major overhaul of the driver training and testing process.

One of the country's leading fleet insurance brokers, Staveley Head, has been studying the proposals and a spokesman for the company said "Under the new proposals many urban areas, particularly outside schools, will have the speed limit reduced from 30mph to 20mph. the speed limit on single carriageway A roads will be reduced from 60mph to 50mph, largely affecting rural areas. A range of motoring offences will attract increased points and fines, and it may be possible for a motorist to be banned after only two speeding offences if he exceeds the statutory speed limit by more than 15-20mph on two occasions."

The way people learn to drive and how they are tested is also in for major reform. The learning process and theory and practical tests will all be improved. Van drivers will also be given the chance to improve the skills they need for their work through a new vocational qualification.

The Staveley Head spokesman went on to say " This proposed van driver qualification is of particular interest to Staveley Head as we underwrite a very substantial amount of van fleet insurance. The Government proposals have not given any indication what form the qualification will take or if it will be mandatory."

Philip Gomm of the RAC commented "A blanket reduction in speed limits risks alienating motorists and ignoring individual road circumstances."

For a number of years motoring authorities have warned that the Government road safety strategy will criminalise thousands of motorists who commit relatively trivial offences, many of whom are not even aware they are committing an offence.

Staveley Head is one of the UK's leading insurance providers and will give you all the advice and assistance you need on this subject or any other aspect of fleet insurance, including a very competitive quote.
