Mustang: The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West.

Critically acclaimed writer Deanne Stillman returns to discuss her new book, "Mustang: The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West." The Los Angeles Times named it a "Best Book of 2008." Inspired by the 1998 killing of 34 mustangs near Reno, Mustang provides a fascinating narrative chronicling the enduring journey and history of the American mustang. A stampeding, crusading history of horses in America during the last half-millennium...a spirited defense of the wild horse, as well as a rousing, sweeping account of the horse from the arrival of the conquistadors, who would not have been able to subdue North America without it...a well-written, welcome work of history and advocacy.

The Autry National Center's Museum of the American West is located in Griffith Park in Los Angeles on a broad expanse of equestrian trails. Riders can hitch their horses in corrals outside the museum and come for lunch and exhibition viewing. The special relationship with the horse is celebrated with exhibitions and community programs throughout the year.

The Autry National Center celebrates the American West through three important institutions: the Museum of the American West, the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, and the Institute for the Study of the American West. The Autry was established in 2003 following the merger of the Southwest Museum, the Women of the West Museum, and the Museum of the American West (formerly the Autry Museum of Western Heritage). Through innovative exhibitions, a broad range of programs and extensive collection of art and artifacts, the Autry National Center explores the distinct stories and interactions of cultures and peoples, and their impact on the complex, evolving history of the American West.
