Madoff Love - When Cutting edge conceptual artist R. Lloyd Ming learned about a large group of people who actually approve of what Bernard Madoff did, he created a controversial work of art called 'My Hero' in response.

Understandably, most people have feelings of contempt for Bernard Madoff, the money manager who recently pleaded guilty to operating a $50 billion dollar ponzi scheme. However, there is a large group who consider Madoff a saint for what he did. In response to these people; artist R. Lloyd Ming created 'My Hero', a controversial art installation of various 14 karat gold leaf framed photographs of Madoff that spell the words 'My Hero' when hung on a wall. Some of the photos even have lipstick kiss marks on the glass where someone has kissed Madoff's photo in apparent admiration.

"Like many people, I read about Madoff in online blogs," says artist R. Lloyd Ming. "As expected, most blogs had posts by people venting their disgust for Madoff. However I was shocked to read posts that held quite the opposite view." Ming discovered that Madoff had many fans with a wide range of opinions including anti-Semitic views. Since Madoff is Jewish some people are pleased that he helps to perpetuate a stereotype of Jewish people as greedy. There are many people who despise money managers as generally corrupt so Madoff helped to prove their views. Others hate rich people and naïve investors and feel that they got what they deserve. "Some people hate the pollution from private jets and luxury cars so they are happy that many Madoff clients cannot buy them now," says Ming. "There is even a large group of people who are impressed with his scam and would love to do the same thing, except for getting caught."

"After I read the first few Madoff-as-hero posts I did a search of the term 'Madoff is my hero' and was disturbed to find 8 pages of results," says R. Lloyd Ming. "My art has always functioned as social commentary so I felt this was an appropriate art subject. The My Hero artwork reminds us that whenever there is a popular opinion, you will always find people with a conflicting stance, for better or worse."
