Northeastern Montana - Rich in Traditional Cultures
Western history comes alive every summer in Montana's Missouri River Country. A list of area events and a short description is included.
Wolf Point, MT (PRWEB) May 6, 2009 -- The rich heritage of days long gone runs deep in the high plains of eastern Montana. Native Americans, fur traders, early pioneer settlers and many more have called the rolling hills of Montana's Missouri River Country home. Now their present day descendants are celebrating the traditions and cultures passed down over generations and they invite you to join in all the festivities the area has to offer during June and July, 2009.
A brief round-up of the celebrations and festivals includes:
- Red Bottom Celebration - this powwow has been held annually for more than 100 years. This year you can join the activities June 18-21 in Frazer. Come celebrate native culture and traditions through dancing, food, crafts and fellowship. All members of the public are welcome to participate or watch.
| | - Fort Union Rendezvous - a former fur trading post dating back to the 1800s, Fort Union, near Sidney, springs to life again June 18-21. Traders, craftsmen and Native Americans relive the post's heyday with a four day encampment. Visitors get a peek back in time with the mountain men tanning hides, a blacksmith hard at work, artisans crafting jewelry and teepees filled with Native American artifacts. There are demonstrations, speakers and storytellers to keep you entertained.
- Frontier Days - stretching back 40 years, this popular event offers a parade, rodeo, community follies and other entertainment during June 19-20 in Culbertson. The rodeo grounds include a unique, tiered-parking system so you don't have to leave the comfort of your vehicle to watch the rodeo.
- Wild West Days - this late June weekend in Poplar kicks off with a day designed for kids. Bike races, contests and more will be held on Friday. Saturday and Sunday feature a parade, rodeo with NRA rules and a dance. Visit June 19-21 to take part in the fun.
- Badlands Celebration - a traditional powwow held in celebration of native culture and traditions. Everyone is invited to join in or watch the celebration June 25-28 in Poplar. There will be dancing, food and refreshments, fellowship with one another and crafts.
- Pioneer Days and Antique Show - these days will have you wishing for the past in Scobey, June 26-28. Start off with a pancake and sausage breakfast at the Cook Cars. Then take a leisurely stroll down the boardwalks of Pioneer Town, home to historic buildings over 100 years in age. The Dirty Shame Belles and the Dixieland Band team up to bring you a fun vaudeville show appropriate for the whole family. An antique car and tractor parade, children's street games, an art show and cool family drinks in the Dirty Shame Saloon round out the weekend.
- Milk River Days and Cowboys Rodeo - celebrate a true American holiday with a rodeo and free street dance. Come to Hinsdale July 3-4 for a parade, kid games, horseshoe, ping pong drop, beef barbecue and free fireworks to light up the night sky. There are also excellent opportunities to fish for Walleye, Northern Pike and Catfish or water-ski and boat over a 13 mile area. And don't forget to check out the quick draw pistol shoot and cannon shoot.
- Fort Kipp Celebration - the final area powwow takes place July 3-5 near Brockton. Visitors are welcome to join in a celebration of native traditions and cultures. There will be crafts, food, dancing and fellowship. You can join the fun or watch from the sidelines.
- Wolf Point Wild Horse Stampede - Three days of fun for everyone July 9-11 in Wolf Point! The best cowboys in town turn out for the PRCA rodeo. Plus there's a parade each day, along with a carnival, the Human Stampede Run/Walk, the world famous wild horse race, kids' stick-horse rodeo, street dances and cowboy church. This legendary event is celebrating its 88th anniversary as an organized event.
