New York, NY and Bangkok, Thailand, (PRWEB) May 1, 2009 - Mekhong

The Spirit of Thailand is quickly capturing the palates of American consumers and the favor of an elite group of bar chefs and mixologists who describe Mekhong as "the most exciting exotic spirit to come along in awhile" for mixing in cocktails. Among the group are New York-based Willy Shine of Contemporary Cocktails Inc.; Dushan Zaric of Employees Only, and Jack Judson of the widely popular Apotheke in Manhattan.

Las Vegas-based Tony Abou-Ganim, The Modern Mixologist and one of the most celebrated cocktail experts in the industry, describes Mekhong in his tasting notes as "...Rich with slight bitterness. Herbaceous with a slight tannin quality to it (wood aging?) Nice finish medium to long. Good structure and balanced spirit with good acid. Can see application in cocktails."

Now the premium blended and distilled Thai spirit made mostly from sugar cane and rice and infused with a special blend of indigenous Thai herbs and spices is racking up prestigious international tasting awards.

In the first quarter of 2009, Mekhong has been awarded a Gold Medal "Superior Rating" in a triple-blind tasting from the American Masters of Taste of the Chefs In America Awards Foundation, which named Mekhong the No. 1 Asian Spirit in America in its World Beverage Championship. Brussels, Belgium's MONDE SELECTION, International Institution for Quality Selections, awarded a Silver Medal to Mekhong in the 2009 World Spirits & Liqueurs Selection. Mekhong picked up a Bronze Medal at the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, which included 450 distillers and importers submitting around 750 spirits from 21 countries, and is a blind taste voting by a prestigious panel of judges including editor and commentator Anthony Dias Blue and F. Paul Pacult, of The Spirit Journal and Beverage Alcohol Resource.

"We are pleased with growing popularity of Mekhong in the U.S. and around the world, and these coveted awards underscore the premium quality and taste of Mekhong," said David Lind, worldwide marketing manager for the brand.

New to the U.S., but a million case-seller in Asia, Mekhong is a unique premium blended and distilled Thai spirit made mostly from sugar cane and rice and infused with a special blend of indigenous Thai herbs and spices. The highly secret Mekhong recipe delivers a distinctively rounder texture, delightful aroma and a smooth and more balanced taste than most golden spirits.

At 35% alcohol by volume, the product's smooth mixability makes Mekhong an ideal spirit for fascinating and flavorful cocktails. Mekhong is a complex and well balanced blended and distilled spirit with a golden, dark amber and reddish copper appearance. Its flavor and aroma is both spicy and sweet with hints of ginger, honey, toffee, vanilla, floral, herbs and citrus.

Mekhong will be one of the featured spirits at the New York Bar Show in June and at the world's premier bar chef mixology event in New Orleans this July called Tales of the Cocktail. Mekhong has been featured in more 100 media, Web sites and cocktail blogger columns.

Mekhong comes in a unique 750-ml international bottle in which a motif of traditional Thai boat iconography of the Mekhong River is used in a subtle and contemporary manner. A colorful red and gold ribbon is tied around the neck of each bottle. The ribbons are a symbol of good luck and are representative of the ones boaters tie around their vessels to ward off evil spirits as they travel the Mekhong River. A 750-ml bottle of Mekhong retails for $22.99.
