Federal Agencies Will Present How They are Working with Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) at 2009 Spring CCS Health IT Summit

The CCS Health IT Summit announces that the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, Centers for Disease Control and the Department of Veterans Affairs will present how federal agencies are working with the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 1, 2009 -- The CCS Health IT Summit announces that the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, Centers for Disease Control and the Department of Veterans Affairs will present how federal agencies are working with the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) this June 16th in Fort Lauderdale, FL.        

The Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) has been developed to allow organizations to share health data with other participating organizations in a secure, standards-based manner. As one of the major stakeholders in U.S. healthcare and citizen benefits administration, the federal government is building a gateway solution that will help more that 20 federal agencies participating in the Federal Health Architecture program. In 2008, six federal agencies demonstrated their ability to securely exchange electronic health data through the NHIN using CONNECT. 15 regional health information organizations also participated in the pilots. In February of 2009, live production events began for the NHIN, starting with the Social Security Administration's go live in which it began receiving live patient data from MedVirginia.

The panel discussion entitled, "A CONNECTed Healthcare System: The Federal Government's Role in Promoting the Nationwide Health Information Network" will be chaired by Vish Sankaran, Director of the Federal Health Architecture (FHA), Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, HHS and take place Tuesday June 16th, 2009 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Panelists include Charles Magruder, Project Officer for Centers for Disease Control, Tim Cromwell, Director of Standards & Interoperability, Office of the CMIO for the Department of Veterans Affairs and Craig Miller, Executive Director, Enterprise Solutions, Vangent Corporation who is the Chief Architect for the Federal Health Architecture CONNECT Initiative.

This session will provide: an update on the CONNECT solution; an overview of how federal agencies are using the solution to tie into the NHIN: an outline of the benefits that federal participation in the NHIN will provide to patients, care providers, payors and other health stakeholders; and it will detail the benefits that a nationwide network of interoperable health IT citizens will provide to citizens - benefits ranging from improved healthcare and faster benefits administration to more quickly indentifying and addressing public health emergencies.
