Vatcher-Martin, M.A., releases her children's book, "Haiku For You: With Some One Room School House History," to encourage kids of all ages to pen Haiku. This full color book provides the reader with an insight into the history of one room school houses that are still in existence. Additionally, there are plenty of ocean photos, historic buildings, cats, llamas, and colorful nature scenes to engage the reader and writer.
The workbook is illustrated with the author's fine art photography which will assist the child in writing a variety of Haiku. She chose a variety of photographs to fully illustrate this workbook to inspire and educate. For example, her photographs capture the essence of the historic one room school houses that are still in use. Some of those one room school houses are used to teach children today, while others are home to area museums.
She intertwines her love for haiku and photography by including authentic photos of children who attended one room school houses in Michigan and Rhode Island. A few other historic photos represent one room school houses from other parts of the United States. These photographs illustrate what the children and the teachers looked like in the 1800's and through the turn of the century.
As an educator she includes examples of how to write a Haiku, and the way to read it as a poet. She explores different subjects to write Haiku about, and, also includes an oral history of a gentleman who attended a one room school house in the 1930's. The story he tells is very inspirational and gives insight into what attending school was like back then.
Haiku For You: With Some One Room School House History can be used as a classroom workbook as it contains lessons on how to write Haiku, as well as some historical tidbits from today and yesteryear. Her upbeat syle of writing is apparent in this one of a kind book. The fine art photographs not only inspire children and adults, it provides the reader with a visual picture to help him or her write wonderful Haiku!
Haiku For You: With Some One Room School House History, is prominently displayed inside of Canton's Historical Museum. Museum Director, Liz Carlson framed one of the printed Haiku from the book and put it next to the book which rests on an authentic one room school house bench from the Museum which is Canton Center School.

Haiku For You: With Some One Room School House History is also a part of the Romulus Museum's collection, in Romulus, MI. District No. I One Room School House is showcased inside of this book as well as a Haiku written specifically about this restored one room school house from 1839.
