Organizations calculate carbon dioxide emissions that could be saved by using online voting instead of paper ballots

Online voting prevents billions of pounds of harmful greenhouse gases from entering our environment every year. Our calculator educates businesses and organizations about their environmental impact and helps them make informed decisions about reducing their carbon footprint

Votenet™ Solutions, Inc., the leading provider of secure online voting and nomination solutions for associations, corporations, law firms, non-profits, universities and organizations, announced today their Online Voting Carbon Footprint Calculator that enables organizations to determine the amount of environmentally harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that could be saved by using online voting instead of paper ballots. The Online Voting Carbon Footprint Calculator can be accessed at http://www.votenet.com/treecampaign/carbon_calculator.cfm

For example, a large, global organization can quickly calculate the environmental impact of paper ballots used within its entire worldwide operation. An organization with 500,000 eligible voters, using five paper pages in an election mailing, and holding four voting events per year uses approximately 1,210,779 pounds of CO2, compared to only 82,012 if the organization had used online voting. The 1,128,767 pounds of CO2 saved is equivalent to not driving 1,106,191 miles in a passenger car, not burning 522,577 pounds of coal, and planting 4,645 fully mature trees.

A small, locally-based organization with 2,500 eligible voters, using two paper pages in an election mailing, and holding one election per year uses approximately 443 pounds of CO2, compared to only 103 pounds if the organization had used online voting. The 340 pounds of CO2 saved is equivalent to not driving 333 miles in a passenger car, not burning 157 pounds of coal, and planting 1.39 fully mature trees.

Developed in conjunction with partner Renewable Choice Energy (RCE), the leading provider of renewable energy and carbon offsets in the U.S., the calculator allows businesses and organizations to gain a clear picture of the environmental impact of their paper-based ballots and learn how they can immediately become more environmentally responsible by changing to online voting.

"Online voting prevents billions of pounds of harmful greenhouse gases from entering our environment every year. Our calculator educates businesses and organizations about their environmental impact and helps them make informed decisions about reducing their carbon footprint," stated Michael Tuteur, CEO and President, Votenet Solutions, Inc.
