Nelson Donates $10K to CSUS Department of Nursing

Financial Gift Allows Stanislaus Program to Address California's Nursing Shortage.

Sonoma, CA (PRWEB) May 25, 2009

Gary and Marcia Nelson and the Nelson Family of Companies have contributed $10,000 to the Department of Nursing at California State University Stanislaus. Mr. Nelson is the Chairman and CEO of the Nelson Family of Companies, which includes the largest independent staffing firm in Northern California.

Nelson grew up in Modesto, graduating from Downey High School in 1955. The business he started in 1970 has become a $300 million company with seven divisions and 30 offices. The Modesto branch of Nelson Staffing opened in 2006. For Gary Nelson, community involvement and support have always been a priority. At the Modesto office's one-year anniversary celebration, he committed to finding a worthy local program that he could support. He chose the new nursing program at CSU Stanislaus.

CSU Stanislaus is making crucial strides in addressing the nursing shortage in California by instituting a Master of Science program, made possible in part by Nelson's $10,000 gift. This new funding will allow the University to establish initial courses this spring, admitting 16 qualified nurses who would otherwise not have been able to participate.

A major reason for the state's nursing shortage is a critical need for qualified nursing faculty. A minimum of a master's degree is required to become a nursing professor. Currently there is not sufficient faculty to educate the nurses California so urgently needs. This shortage of qualified faculty/professors is expected to increase significantly since many nursing professors are nearing retirement. As additional community financial support augments Nelson's $10K springboard, the University projects that approximately 40 to 50 master's prepared nurses--qualified to assume leadership positions--will graduate within the next five years. These graduates will provide the faculty necessary for the expansion of nursing programs throughout California.

To further ensure the program's growth, CSU Stanislaus is exploring additional funding sources including matching funds from the California State University Chancellor's office and private donors.
