Corinth, MS (PRWEB) May 5, 2009 -- James Beverly has been awarded the prestigious Parent to Parent Life Buzz Award for his recently released book More Tales of Seamus the Sheltie. The book garnished the 2009 Children's Book Award and a second award in the Hot Product category. These distinguished awards are given to exemplary products that entertain and teach, while inspiring imagination and creativity. The Award Committees are comprised of experts from across the United States who are involved with children on a daily basis. Following committee approval, the product is given or forwarded to Family Testing Groups - real families - for testing, reviewing, and evaluating before final decisions are reached.

"I am absolutely thrilled and honored to receive these awards," said author James Beverly. "It is very humbling to be counted among previous award winners such as Disney and PBS. Being recognized in two separate categories is a special honor."

It's not easy being a kid. There are lots of things to know and learn, and some of them are scary. It's not easy being a parent, either. Sometimes it's hard to find the right words to explain a situation, share our values, or comfort our kids. This award-winning book helps both parents and children to talk about important subjects with the assistance of an unusual guide - a Shetland sheepdog named Seamus.

In More Adventures of Seamus the Sheltie, the lovable sheepdog both learns and teaches valuable lessons about trust, compassion, and even proper behavior on car trips. But wisely, the book doesn't preach. Kids can identify with Seamus' feelings - his exhilaration at feeling the wind through a car window, his curiosity when confronted by a strange neighbour, or his fear of going to (shudder) the vet. This author does not flinch when it comes to dealing with difficult issues such as adoption, loss of family members, how to handle bullies, fear of doctors, the true meaning of Christmas, and the joy of experiencing the simple things in life like dancing and playing in the leaves.

Implementing his Master's level training as a child psychologist with more than 35 years of experience, the award-winning author cleverly creates a language for Seamus, a real dog, to help address topics that parents often times find difficult to discuss with their children. Small children will relate to Seamus' simple way of speaking. James based the dog's language on canine physiology (dogs can't say the "th" sound, for instance, because their tongues get in the way) and a vocabulary based on the 85 human words that Seamus understands. Additionally, the imagination of the well-loved dog has a distinctive flavor of humor that only Seamus could conjure up, which proves popular with both children and adults alike, while inspiring a readily available and easy approach to discuss sticky situations in today's society.

One 5th grade class is using the book for group discussions and homework assignments on the characters, situations, and values inherent in each story.

Today, Seamus can be found wagging his tail more frequently as he has been presented with his very own website where children can join his fan club, download free posters, a free Seamus coloring book, and listen to a three minute reading from the new book by his amazing owner. A short video of the book is also available along with a free lesson on Seamus-Speak.

Heartwarming and educational, readers agree that the Seamus the Sheltie books are enjoyable and fun for the entire family. Parents who want to have meaningful discussions with their children about family values in a fun and entertaining way should consider this book. Great job and awesome book!
Nan Stewart, VP Online Reviewing Committee, Life Buzz Award

As a follow-up to his first book, The Adventures of Seamus the Sheltie, James Beverly has created another wonderful way for parents to connect with their children and also provide them with important life lessons. Beverly is obviously well qualified and experienced in knowing the scary challenges of childhood and has paved a compassionate way for learning and encouragement. The very act of reading out loud is a bonding experience for parent and child and the stories of Seamus are rooted in the realities of life tempered with great imagination and fun. Beverly also exhibits an obvious love of dogs and an uncommon understanding of their behavior and what they add to our lives.

The basis of the stories in Beverly's new book, More Adventures of Seamus the Sheltie, come from parents who, no doubt, have struggled with the issues, values and lessons that lie at the heart of each story. The focus of both books is that understanding is an antidote for fear and leads to a kinder world. The wise parent will recognize that their children will encounter many and perhaps all of the challenges and value issues found in the books. The Seamus stories allow the imaginative parent to be proactive in preparing their children and giving them tools to deal with these challenges and make right decisions.

The discussion guide at the end of the book is concise but complete enough to guide a parent in a discussion. He achieves the right balance between explanation and brevity.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
James Beverly was born in Seco, a small historical coal mining town in eastern Kentucky. He is an only child. His family moved from Kentucky to Detroit when he was five years old. He grew up in Detroit, graduating from Cass Technical High School and receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Wayne State University, he received a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Child Psychology from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo Ontario, Canada. Following the success of his nationally award-winning book, The Adventures of Seamus the Sheltie, Mr. Beverly received many requests from parents asking if he would please write additional stories for them that would deal with some specific and difficult topics that they were having problems with trying to discuss them with their child.
