Hamlet Heavy Timberwork Blends Custom Building with pre-fab to Help a Chelsea, Quebec Family Build Their Timber Frame Dream Home

After years of planning, a Chelsea, Quebec family builds their timber framed dream home in a matter of months with the help of timber framing company Hamlet Heavy Timberwork. Off-site pre-fabrication of the timber frame structure and insulated walls allowed them to move into their new home in record time.

Rigaud, Quebec (PRWEB) May 7, 2009 -- The Hollington family is now enjoying their custom timber framed home that sits on a beautiful 5 acre forested lot in Chelsea, Quebec. Considering the planning took over five years, the actual build was very quick - about 5 months from the time the ground was broken to the time the homeowners were moving in. Part of the speed was due to the high degree of organization on site, managed by the clients themselves. The other major reason was due to the house being pre-fabricated off site in large sections by timber framing company Hamlet Heavy Timberwork. The pre-fabricated frames and walls were then rapidly assembled on site with a crane. The follwoing link displays pictures of the inside of the timber frame home in Chelsea, Quebec.

"We did not want the project to drag on for a year or more as we were renting another house at the same time - so we started looking at pre-fab housing. We also wanted to build something unique that incorporated timber frame construction. We did not want to pick something mass produced, from a catalogue", says owner Chad Hollington, a local Chelsea entrepreneur. This wish-list led them to pre-fab timber frame home producer Hamlet Heavy Timberwork, located in Rigaud, Quebec. Hamlet worked with the Hollingtons on creating a custom design that lent itself to being pre-fabricated off site.

Both the timber framing and 24 foot long wall panels were built in their workshop, numbered and stacked on a truck, and raised quickly on site by crane. Hollington talks about the time savings, "We probably saved two months of site time building this way, and the end product is so much more beautiful. While our site was quiet and buried under snow in March, Hamlet was building our house inside their shop. If I ever build again, I'll do the exact same thing."

This is the second time the Hollingtons have tried to build their dream home. The first time, the project unravelled at the last minute. Hollington's business was closely linked to NHL merchandising, and it was the year of the NHL lockout. His business suffered badly, and he had to both re-invent his company and put his building plans on hold. Unfortunately, timbers had already been ordered for the project. "Hamlet was very understanding and accommodating of our situation - they told us to hang in there and come back when we were ready to build. And that's what we did", says Hollington.

Further information:
Timber framing, one of the oldest methods of building in the world, involves the use of heavy timbers joined together with all-wooden mortise & tenon joinery, held in place with oak pegs. Practically lost as a craft in the earlier part of the 20th century, this building method has experienced a major revival over the past twenty-five years, as timber frame homes and public buildings are becoming more and more popular.

Hamlet Heavy Timberwork is a Quebec company specializing in producing & installing traditional timber frames in Canada, the USA and Europe. Unlike most other timber frame companies, they use medieval scribe carpentry techniques - learn more here: http://heavytimberwork.com/tradition.html
