UK Attractions Visitor Numbers Set to Increase

A report from the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT), following a survey they recently conducted of 3,000 British adults, shows that 60% of those surveyed were unwilling to give up holidays. Research that shows the downturn is now putting people off going abroad and 50% said they needed to cut costs and as a result, twice as many Britons are planning to spend their holidays in the UK this year compared with last.

Manchester, UK (PRWEB) May 15, 2009 -- A report from the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT), following a survey they recently conducted of 3,000 British adults, shows that 60% of those surveyed were unwilling to give up holidays. Research that shows the downturn is now putting people off going abroad and 50% said they needed to cut costs and as a result, twice as many Britons are planning to spend their holidays in the UK this year compared with last.
Geoff Cowley, managing director of the Holiday Cottage Group, was able to confirm that Easter bookings for their cottages were up 30% on last year and half-term bookings are up 5%. Already the company has seen the highest number of internet bookings in one day this year.
Advance bookings for 2009 caravan breaks are up by 40% on 2008, according to the Caravan Club and their spokesman Nick Lomas is confident that this year will be the year that welcomes the return of the great British holiday.

This should all be excellent news for the various tourist attractions sited throughout the UK. In particular, it is hoped that the upturn in UK holiday bookings will mean an increase of visitors to our country's historical stately homes and country house estates. Visitor numbers have generally been falling over recent years and this has been causing great anxiety for the ancestral homeowners responsible for their upkeep.

Frances Garnham, assistant policy and campaigns director for the Historic Houses Association, which oversees 1,500 private and charity-owned historic houses in Britain, said "If these houses are to survive they have to be economically viable. Grants have fallen over the last few years. The weather's also been bad, which means visitor numbers are down about 15%. Our members have a backlog of £260m in repairs and some are running on a knife-edge."

Indeed, unless these houses have had something really special to offer it's been difficult to maintain visitor numbers. There is a number of magnificent country estates offering public access dotted around the English countryside. Whether you want to marvel at the architecture, gaze adoringly at the furniture or enjoy what's on offer in the grounds there's a lot to explore.

English Country Houses are some of the most remarkable historical structures in existence. Many great houses in this country survive together with contents which have been assembled over centuries. They have enormous educational potential and can offer an insight into various decades and centuries through the ages.

One such Cheshire gem that definitely offers something special to the visitor is Adlington Hall, Macclesfield, which has been tremendously enhanced by a considerable restoration project. Adlington Hall has been the ancestral home of the Legh family since 1315 and offers a rare glimpse of outstanding architectural history through the ages since it was first developed on the site, set in some 2000 acres in the heart of the Cheshire countryside.

Camilla, the present Legh family member to be entrusted with the burden of responsibility for the on-going maintenance and care of the beautiful Cheshire treasure takes her role very seriously and is to be admired and immensely respected for having the courage to undertake a difficult and costly restoration project.

The end result however is quite stunning. Where the black and white timbers once appeared tired and sadly ageing, now they have been rejuvenised, cleaned and repaired to create a warm mellow dark golden oak coloured frontage to the Tudor building. The extensive restoration project cost in excess of £900,000 as much of the oak timber was in need of attention and has had to be replaced. Specialist skilled craftsmen have been on site for several months carrying out the much needed repairs and restoration to the east elevation, but finally the scaffolding has come down and revealed the hall in its magnificent, renewed splendour.

One of the most unique estates in England, it has lovely gardens and a Victorian Waterfall is currently being restored to cascade and fall once more. Unquestionably Adlington Hall is a must see on anyone's calendar for outdoor activities. Set in the most elegant, tranquil grounds and gardens with a glorious heavenly display of blue bells and an impressive laburnam archway, Old Father Tiber welcomes visitors throughout the summer months of July and August. Groups of visitors (min. 20) can have a rare viewing inside the sacred portals if booked by appointment and the grounds are also open to the public on Sundays and Wednesdays, between 2pm and 5pm.

Adlington is quite simply breathtaking and the most wonderful location for a Wedding or Business Function at any time of the year. Particularly enchanting location for a Wedding whether the bride is seeking a Winter Wonderland, Springtime Delight, Summertime Sensation or Autumn Glory. Tempted yet? It is also absolutely ideal for Summer-time lazy days with Marquees for corporate functions or family celebrations.

Guests lucky enough to be invited to any Wedding or other celebration at Adlington Hall will not be disappointed. With the choice of The Hunting Lodge or The Hall being made available or a combination of the facilities, a special celebration here would simply be quite splendid.
