On May 10th 2008 Jenna Bush, daughter of the former president, George W. Bush, married Henry Hager, a White House aide at the Bush family ranch in Crawford, Texas. Doug Wead's article follows the efforts of Ultimate Wedding Cake, a company based out of Texas, in the planning, stress, and fulfillment of a wedding cake for such a high profile client.
"It was just another December day at the office in 2007 when I got a phone call from a stranger, asking about a Tres Leches wedding cake for the weekend of May 10, 2008," recalls Mary Jane Ontiveroz, owner of Ultimate Wedding Cake.
The article follows the story of how Mary Jane & her husband Tom booked an order for a wedding cake for a couple named Lindsay & Tim, only to discover some weeks later that the cake she would be making would be for the Jenna Bush Wedding. Finally the story tells of how the delicate wedding cake was transported 195 miles to the ranch in Crawford, inside a freezer in the back of a small van.
Mary Jane goes on to say "The White House staffers had given us meticulous directions, but we weren't able to travel the Interstate, as it was closed down. We followed another route that Tom had laid out in the case of any changes. I remember I was a nervous wreck & kept telling Tom, "Slow down, slow down. Watch the curves!"
Mary Jane had long dreamed of making a wedding cake for a celebrity & now that life long dream had come true. On arriving at the reception site they were taken to meet with the President & much to Mary Jane's delight the White House photographers were on hand to take a photograph of the group. Afterwards Mary Jane & Tom carefully set about setting up the cake in the reception tent. Mary Jane, pleased with how it looked, left it then in the capable hands of the florist to apply the floral arrangements. Unfortunately, when she later saw a picture of the wedding cake on TV it had a pronounced tilt & as a result went straight into the history books!
"As you can imagine, we've been a little busier since May 10th of last year--and that's been a real blessing. People still ask us about the "special delivery", and we are happy to be able to tell the story! We wish the Hagers a Happy 1st Anniversary and a long and wonderful life together!" said Tom Ontiveroz.
