Indianapolis (PRWEB) May 11, 2009

On April 1, the Indiana Board of Education approved a comprehensive set of new math standards for the state's students in kindergarten through high school, which will take effect in 2010. These academic benchmarks are built on the recommendations of the National Math Panel and are designed to prepare Indiana's students for success in a world "driven by information," "powered by knowledge" and "energized by technology." To support the state in this critical initiative, the education and technology company, Pearson, is offering the Board of Education a comprehensive suite of K-12 math programs that directly align to these new state standards.

"Our education leaders here in Indiana have demonstrated their commitment to our children's future with the adoption of these new world-class academic standards," said Jim Malcolm, Pearson vice president for Indiana.

Malcolm added, "Our K-12 math programs map directly to Indiana's new learning goals and to the findings of the National Math Panel and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Focal Points. The integrated components of Pearson's mathematics education solutions are based on years of research and will allow teachers to provide the instruction, intervention and assessment that will form the critical foundation to prepare their students for success in college and in their 21st century careers."

The Pearson programs that will be submitted to Indiana are:

  • Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley enVisionMATH for grades K-6. An innovative, research-based curriculum aligned to Indiana's new state standards, enVisionMATH is the 1 math program today in schools across the country.
  • Indiana Prentice Hall Math Course 1, 2, 3 and Algebra Readiness ©2010 for grades 6-8. This middle grade math program is a research-based curriculum aligned with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Focal Points.
  • Indiana Prentice Hall Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 ©2011 for grades 9-12. Pearson's new Prentice Hall high school math series is aligned to the Indiana state standards. This program is designed to change the way students see math - how they engage in the mathematics, how they understand the concepts and how they can transfer those skills to tests, college and life.
  • For high school students, Pearson is also submitting topics-based Thinking Mathematically for third- and fourth-year math as well as programs for Precalculus and Advanced Placement Calculus.

Pearson will also submit three programs created under the auspices of the National Science Foundation and funded by this independent federal agency.

  • Investigations in Number, Data and Space, 2nd Edition for grades K-5. A research-based, child-centered approach to teaching mathematics through engaging activities, discussions and problem-solving, Investigations was developed at TERC in Cambridge, Mass. Backed by years of research and now the choice of thousands of school districts across the country, it is designed to help all learners understand the fundamental ideas of number and operations, geometry, data, measurement and early algebra.
  • CMP2 (Connected Math Project 2) for grades 6-8. Developed at Michigan State University by a team of leading mathematics experts, CMP2 students learn important mathematical ideas in the context of engaging, interconnected problems. This exploration leads to understanding and the development of higher order thinking skills and problem-solving strategies.
  • CME (Center for Mathematics Education Project) for grades 9-12. Developed by the Center for Mathematics Education at the Education Development Center in Newton, Mass., the CME Project is a four-year comprehensive high school mathematics program that is problem-based, student-centered and organized around the themes of Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus.
