Wondering what to give Dad for Father's Day? Well this year, forget the wallet, belt or tie. He probably has a drawer full of them anyway. Instead, give Dad something he'll really appreciate: Father's Day weekend at Frisco's 16th Annual BBQ Challenge on June 19-20.
Dad, Mom and the whole family can chow down on grilled, smoked and barbecued delicacies from some of the country's best backyard BBQers. In addition to succulent beef, pork and ribs, savory barbecued alligator might tempt more daring Dads and vegetarian dads are sure to smack their lips over the barbecued tofu.
But the BBQ Challenge is more than just great food. It's a two-day festival of family fun, fresh air and great live music, including breakout blues artist Eric Lindell and Lez Zeppelin, the all-girl Led Zeppelin cover band.
Kids will love the pig races and the "kids kook-off" contest, always a favorite with budding BBQers. And, "when the cookin' stops, the party keeps going" with the Miller Lite BBQ happy hour.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Frisco Chamber of Commerce and the Colorado Restaurant Association Education Fund (CRAEF). CRAEF will fund the ProStart program, a statewide program providing scholarships to students of Summit High School aspiring to a career in the hospitality industry.
"Frisco is known for the unusual and lighthearted events we sponsor year-round," said Tim Bock, Town of Frisco spokesman. "Our events focus on giving back to the community, the reason behind supporting ProStart again at this year's BBQ Challenge. Last year 20,000 people sampled the wares of more than 50 teams, and this year we're expecting even more. Who doesn't love the combination of supporting a good cause while sampling the best barbecue to be had this side of the Mississippi?"
The event kicks off on Friday, June 19 at noon, with live music beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Historic Park Gazebo. "Hog Backs" tickets may be purchased from ticket booths on Main Street to buy food and drinks from contestants, vendors and restaurants throughout the weekend.
The fun continues on Saturday, June 20:
This year's event will feature zero-waste stations with 22 ounce cups that can be reused at all Frisco's signature events. Past events in Frisco using the zero-waste stations diverted 71 percent of the waste from landfills through recycling and composting.
In 2008, Frisco raised nearly $60,000 at the two-day event, which is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.
