As the children read and absorb, they lose themselves in the sheer, simple joy of learning. And if the book itself is beautifully and lovingly illustrated, the learning process becomes accelerated; the children become fully involved as they turn the pages. The toddlers draw a quick, direct link between the words on the page and the colourful illustrations that accompany them - and they have loads of fun as they learn.

Leroy Comrie is a father and grandfather, a man with a vested interest in youngsters and child development. He is also the author of a newly published, colourfully illustrated book for toddlers called Painted Cats. The book is dedicated to his young grandson Nathan and is illustrated by the author's son Kevin Comrie.

Painted Cats is engagingly simple. Each page contains a sassy illustration of a cat - or cats - with the colour of the cat matched to the words on the page.

As an example, the first cat in Painted Cats is a yellow-coated pet called Fade. The words say simply: "I see yellow on Fade," which immediately plants the seed in a youngster's mind linking the colour with the cat. On the next page, the orange-coloured cat is called Smudge and the words note simply that "There's orange on Smudge too."

And on it goes: The two green cats, Zig and Zag; the blue spots on Dotty; the pink fur on Swirl; the red paint on Splat; and the painted, purple toes on Squiggle, the ultimate "painted cat." Your kids and grandkids will love them all.

And they will love the book, too. These painted cats are very cool cats - and Painted Cats is a wonderful first book for your eager-to-learn toddler.
