Puff, Puff, Pass - Lighting Up with KAPAKAHI
Urban Aloha for the masses! KAPAKAHI is releasing their 2nd album to much anticipation on June 2nd.
San Francisco, CA (Billboard Publicity Wire/PRWEB ) May 17, 2009 -- After an action-packed year of touring, and most notably an opening act for UB40, Kapakahi is back with a new EP that's guaranteed to make you smile, and pass it on.
The EP - called Light Up after it's carrier single - is set to hit iTunes on June 2nd. It consists of 7 tracks that build on their signature Reggae/Ska/Hip-Hop sound, or as they like to call it, Urban Aloha.
Their CD Release Party will follow on June 19th at SF's legendary venue, Slims. Along for the release party will be local Latin/Hip-hop sensation, Bayonics, Stranger from San Diego and Dj Deedot.
The concept for Light Up came in 2007 when lead singer Mike Dayao's girlfriend was convalescing in the hospital after a car accident. She was in a great amount of pain, and Mike traveled two hours on Caltrain every day to see her. "With all that time on the train, I began thinking of different ways to make her smile," Mike says today. "That's when I first began thinking of (the lyrics) 'light up the night with your smile and I'll smile back'."
Thinking of ways to do good and make others feel better became something of a mantra during the band's next round of songwriting and recording. "After being together for 4 years, writing, touring and meeting people on the road, we've realized that our music can stand for something more than just a good time," says drummer/manager Steve Salta. "Light Up is the idea that our music can be a positive force in the lives that we come to touch." In the current climate of fear and insecurity, a little positivity can go a long way.
With that in mind, the band decided to go a step further, offering their title track free on their website and even allowing free licensing of the song for non-profit organizations who want to use their music to promote positive change. All they ask of their fans - or as they call it, the Kapakahi Nation - is that they pass the song on to others. Says Steve, "If it lit up your life for 3 minutes of the day, then do the same for someone else!"
Drawing on experiences while on the road and at home in SF, Kapakahi has found their voice, and maybe even their conscience. To be a part of their new adventure, visit www.kapakahimusic.com or preview their EP on itunes.com
