Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) May 29, 2009 -- The Honorable Shirley Franklin, mayor of Atlanta, gathered recently with community leaders, representatives from Atlanta's travel and tourism industry, and key staff from Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants to celebrate the grand opening of the Hotel Palomar Atlanta-Midtown. The ceremony was highlighted by Mayor Franklin's announcement of the Hotel Palomar Atlanta's "ARTlanta in Motion" grant program. This program is designed to aid small and emerging arts organizations throughout Atlanta.

Each quarter, the Hotel Palomar Atlanta will award a $1,000 quarterly grant to one Atlanta-based small or emerging arts organization. A portion of sales from the hotels' meeting rooms, the Woodruff, High, Alliance, Chastain and Rialto, will fund these grants. Moving in the Spirit, a youth development program that uses dance to positively transform the lives of children and teens in Atlanta, will be the first recipient of the "ARTlanta in Motion" grant.
"We are honored to be the first recipient of this grant," said Sheryl Bennett, president of the board of directors for Moving in the Spirit. "Hotel Palomar's commitment to the arts in Atlanta will have a positive impact on our organization as well as provide a much-needed boost to small arts organizations like ours in Atlanta."
Along with the introduction of the "ARTlanta in Motion" grant program, the grand opening ceremony for the Palomar, held at 4 PM on May 14th, featured performances by the Atlanta DrumLine and Moving in the Spirit. The dance troupe's stirring performance culminated with the presentation of a large, animal-print ribbon woven into the end of the dance. The leopard-print ribbon, a symbol of Kimpton's trademark fun, sophisticated style, was cut by Mayor Franklin; owners of the Hotel Palomar Atlanta, Beau King and Butch Ross; General Manager Mark Fischer and Kimpton's President and CEO Mike Depatie and COO Niki Leondakis to signify the official opening of the hotel.
Afterward, a celebration showcasing the hotel's style and amenities followed, attended by nearly a thousand Atlanta VIPs. The ARTlanta in Motion theme continued, led by Moving in the Spirit dances performed as guests arrived, a classical guitarist playing in the hotel's Living Room, live art tableaus, four noted Atlanta authors mingling with guests in the Chastain meeting room, two live Atlanta bands playing jazz, neo-soul, salsa and contemporary music in the ballroom and much more. The hotel showcased its distinctive amenities and standards in four showcase rooms: a suite highlighting many of the hotel's more than 70 eco-friendly daily operational practices, a Mind.Body.Spa room, which was staged to illustrate the hotel's in-room spa program and On Demand yoga and Pilates programming, a romantically staged Presidential Suite, and a room showcasing the hotel's pet-friendly spirit, complete with special pet beds, food bowls and treats.
"I am incredibly excited and honored to bring the Hotel Palomar and the Kimpton brand to Atlanta," said Mark Fischer, general manager of the Hotel Palomar Atlanta-Midtown. "We are also excited to become a vital part of Atlanta's art community through our 'ARTlanta in Motion' grant. We hope to help transform Hotlanta into ARTlanta."
