New Wine Book Helps Identify the Grapes Behind the Wine

Short on words but long on detail, "The Frugal Oenophile's Winegrape Primer" contains succinct descriptions of more than 200 popular winegrapes, each with a brief history, where the wine can be found, the wine's characteristics, and a few food matches.

Oakville, Ontario, Canada (PRWEB) May 23, 2009 -- If wine writer and best-selling author Richard Best had a slogan, it would surely be "Find a need and fill it." When he couldn't find a comprehensive reference to wine language, he wrote his popular The Frugal Oenophile's Lexicon of Wine Tasting Terms. This time around he's tackled the immense world of winegrapes. Best recently published The Frugal Oenophile's Winegrape Primer, and the response from wine fans has been terrific.

"There really isn't a quick and simple reference available for winegrapes," says Best. "Most of the books out there are huge reference works with either too much or too little information."

Like the wine language Lexicon, the Primer is short on words but long on detail. More than 200 popular winegrapes are included. Each entry gives a brief history, where the wine can be found, the wine's characteristics, and a few food matches. "The goal was to include all of the names that can readily be found on wine bottle labels," Best explains.

The book begins with a crash course in wine theory: just enough information about viniculture and its history to get a good grounding. Then white and red grapes are covered, each in its own section. When a wine is better known by a regional or other "non-grape" name, its entry includes references to the underlying grapes. For example, Beaujolais is included along with a references to Gamay, the red grape of Beaujolais, and Chardonnay, the corresponding white grape. The appendix starts with a quick tour of the Old World wine regions that use place names (appellations), followed by a glossary of oenological terms. There is also a complete index to all entries.

The Winegrape Primer can be purchased online through www.frugalwine.com.

Discounts are available for retail vendors and wine clubs.
