New York, NY (PRWEB) May 26, 2009

On June 4, 2009, Tepper Galleries, (110 East 25th Street) New York's oldest auction house will kick off this summer with a sale of American and European paintings capturing the pivotal cultural and societal changes in techniques, and subjects that define fine arts between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Among the offerings on the block will be a range of classic examples from cutting edge artists of this time, spanning from the mid-1800s through 1980s, such as works by Robert Henri, Ralph Blakelock, passionate American realist Eric Sloane, Philip Evergood, Seymour Lipton, Louis Kronberg, (a favorite of Isabella Stuart Gardener) experimental modernist Carl Robert Nolty, Louis Schanker, Wolf Kahn and MGM lion creator Lionel Reiss.

Standouts include Jerome Myers urban New York scenes, the infamous Saul Tepper's representations of American industrial and commercial development and America's first major marine painter Robert Salmon's "Pirates Attacking by Moonlight" (1832).

A sense of hope and optimism is pervasive throughout these artworks. Americans' grand tour experiences abroad are evident in Charles C. Coleman's delicately textured stippled-effect Italianate charcoal on paper, "Landscape with Cypress Trees," while Frank K. M. Rehn evokes his Chelsea Hotel residence employing Impressionist techniques of light and color. Some, like Frederick Becker, explored nature and beauty. And the style of American tonalism is represented in pieces by the likes of Henry Ward Ranger, William Merritt Post and William Fitler Crothers.
