When is a One Hit Wonder Band, No Longer a One Hit Wonder Band?

Boys Don't Cry, who in 1986 had a number 1 smash worldwide hit with “I Wanna Be a Cowboy”, are back 23 years later with a new hit, “Don't Call Me A Country Singer”. Is this the first one hit wonder to make a comeback and have a new hit all over again?

Malibu, CA (Billboard Publicity Wire/PRWEB ) May 28, 2009 -- When is a one hit wonder no longer a one hit wonder? When 23 years later you hit the top 40 once again. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Boys Don't Cry.

Let's go back to 1986, when you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing the infectious "I Wanna Be a Cowboy," which blazed up the charts, landing in the top ten on Billboard. Label deals, tours, several albums and line up changes followed; When it came to a halt, singer/songwriter/producer Nick Richards, who continued to have success behind the scenes in the music industry, never let go of the faith he had in BDC.

2009 found him and original keyboardist Brian Chatton back in the studio, joined by Richards' guitarist son James, to see if they couldn't re-introduce the world to Boys Don't Cry. "I Wanna Be a Cowboy," which is still played on radio as well as being used in films and TV, was a tough act to follow as far as hit singles go, but it seems there was no need to worry. "Don't Call Me a Country Singer" officially became a top 40 hit on the AC charts last week at #37, and was the #1 most added single for the week. As trade bible FMQB crowed, "Boys Don't Cry are back in style!"

"Don't Call Me a Country Singer," which is getting a lot of love at AC stations, with heavy support from KEAO/TIME in Hawaii, has resulted in much renewed interest for the band. The guys are keeping very busy, with plans to release a full CD called "I Was Just Thinking About Sex at the Time" with 9 fresh songs, as well as an iTunes anthology entitled White Punks On Rap (A History Of Boys Don't Cry 1983-1997) featuring 30 tracks of BDC goodness. A Fall tour with other artists who broke in the 80s is in the works, and the video for "Country Singer," which stars Richards, his wife Debbie and six children(!) has garnered interest from reality TV gurus who love the idea of family vignettes set to music.

How does it feel to have another go-round at radio 23 years later? Says Richards, "My kids are so proud of me, I feel like I am 26 again! I am thrilled to be experiencing it once more with them by my side."
With another big hit on their hands, Boys Don't Cry are proof that something good never goes out of fashion.
