12 Emerging Issues That Will Shape the New Business Environment

Social Technologies, a leading research and consulting firm, has completed a study identifying emerging issues that will be critical in shaping the global business environment through 2020. The results of this research will be unveiled at an online event on June 1, 2009.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 29, 2009 -- To enhance its clients' foresight capabilities, Social Technologies, a leading research and consulting firm, has completed a study identifying emerging issues that will be critical in shaping the global business environment through 2020. The results of this research will be unveiled at an online event on June 1, 2009. The event is designed to help senior executives from Fortune 500 companies and top government agencies anticipate the social and technological context within which they will operate over the next 5-10 years.

Critical business issues often originate outside an organization's own industry as fringe ideas or trends, and evolve slowly over years or even decades. This can make it difficult for even the most robust organization to identify and track such issues over time, and to anticipate how they will impact customers, products, and corporate operations as they mature.

For example, the critical emerging issues to be discussed in the June 1 webinar include:

  • De-Globalization--Are converging economic, political, and environmental factors undermining the incentives for doing business globally?
  • An Era of Constraints--With rising constraints on energy, water, emissions, and arable land, how will society's assumptions about abundance and scarcity shift?
  • Augmented Humans--As options proliferate for enhancing people biochemically and technologically, what will be seen as desirable, permissible, and normal?

As Chris Carbone, a director at Social Technologies, notes, "Our clients understand the need to look at long-term trends and issues, but get caught up in the day-to-day. The economic crisis doesn't help, as it is compelling many organizations to focus their thinking on the next quarter or two, which can impede efforts to be ready for the longer-term future. Because of this, we thought this was the perfect time to pull the lens back and explore critical emerging issues that businesses need to start preparing for today. We're truly excited about helping our clients see past today's volatility to tomorrow's opportunities with this research effort."

The June 1 event will be attended by members of the Futures Consortium, a research and networking program for leading companies and agencies which is operated by Social Technologies. Members of the Consortium receive world-class research, attend exclusive events, and join a network of peers who work in foresight, strategy, and innovation at leading organizations.
