Palm Beach County - America's First Resort Destination
Standard Oil Company magnate Henry Flagler is credited with developing Palm Beach County as America's first resort destination. When he broke ground for the Royal Poinciana Hotel on May 1, 1893, Palm Beach was a desolate tropical Atlantic Coast barrier island. The six-story, Georgian-style resort opened on February 11, 1894, as a winter retreat for elite passengers escaping cold northern winters via Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway - which inaugurated service to West Palm Beach on March 22, 1894. Two years later, he built a second hotel, The Palm Beach Inn, later renamed The Breakers. The signing of the Palm Beach County Charter occurred on April 30, 1909, and the destination was formally incorporated on July 1, 1909.
