London, (PRWEB) May 30, 2009 -- With this year set to see the return of the 'staycation' it is no surprise that bookings at Caravan Club sites are experiencing a surge. Advance bookings for the 2009 season are up by 40% on last year. Caravanning is also a very affordable option - the average cost of pitch fees for a family of four, during peak season, is £21.90 per night.
Twenty-year-old Caravan Club member, Jonathan Gray comments, "after caravanning for all of my childhood with my parents, I could not adjust to life without going away for weekends. So at age 19 I joined The Caravan Club and bought a trailer tent. In the summer of 2008 my girlfriend and I travelled to Switzerland and after such a fantastic holiday, I took the plunge and got myself a caravan and now enjoy regular breaks in the UK."
Jonathan is testament to the fact that caravanning is now seen as a trendy holiday option for the younger generation. He continues, "it's fantastic to be able to get away for an affordable mini-break every weekend - I couldn't imagine life without my caravan holidays!"
With the largest membership of any European touring club, The Caravan Club represents the interests of one million caravanners, motor caravanners and trailer tenters. Club members come from all walks of life and all age groups.
Caravanning is a true UK tourism success story. It is a £3 billion a year industry, employing some 90,000 people and Caravan Club members spend over £380million each year in local tourism economies (not including pitch/site fees). To satisfy the increased demand for caravanning holidays, The Caravan Club has added nine new caravan sites to its 200-strong network and these sites alone will see off-site spend in local economies of £5,232,320 each year.
The Caravan Club's Director of Marketing, Nick Lomas, commented, "young families and groups of friends regularly pack-up their caravans and head off to enjoy a break from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Caravanning is a great way to unwind and enjoy some precious relaxation time."
Caravanning also provides the perfect way for children to explore the countryside. A recent poll by Natural England found that a generation ago, 40% of children would play in woodland, heaths and other open spaces during their spare time, but children today are increasingly cosseted with less than 10% playing in the countryside at the weekend or after school.
Chris Packham, the new presenter of BBC's Springwatch, supported the poll by saying children are in danger of losing touch with nature. He said: "if a generation becomes detached from the natural world, it is in danger of becoming indifferent and whilst some skills are learnt in the classroom, others only come from being knee deep in mud and elbow deep in frog spawn. It is these early years of inspiration that set in motion a life time passion; today's young explorers are tomorrow's naturalist and biologists - if they don't learn how it works how will they look after it for the future?"
But with The Caravan Club offering a choice of some 3,000 destinations UK-wide, there are literally thousands of locations where children can discover and enjoy the delights of nature and the countryside.
