LifeCare Offers 10 Fire Safety Tips for National Safety Month

This release shares "10 Tips on Fire Safety" from LifeCare, Inc., in honor of National Safety Month.

Shelton, CT (PRWEB) May 29, 2009 -- LifeCare®, Inc., a leading provider of health and productivity solutions to employers nationwide, is offering the following "10 Tips on Fire Safety" in recognition of June's designation as National Safety Month:

  • Install smoke alarms throughout your home.
  • Clean and test alarms once every month and change batteries once a year.
  • Plan two escape routes out of each room (bedrooms are especially important). Draw each route on a separate sheet of paper and review each route with family members.
  • Practice fire escape routes with all family members once a month. (An ideal time to do this is immediately after you test your fire alarms each month.)
  • Teach household members to stay low to the ground when escaping from a fire.
  • Teach household members to feel doors with the palms of their hands. Instruct them not to open a door that is hot and to find another way out.
  • Keep a whistle in each bedroom to awaken household members in case of fire. Check electrical outlets and make sure they are not overloaded.
  • Purchase at least one fire extinguisher (10 lb., A-B-C type) and get training from your local fire department on how to use it.
  • Have a collapsible ladder on each upper floor/room of your house.
  • Consider installing home sprinklers.
If you are elderly and live alone, have someone help you with these tasks. Also consider purchasing an emergency response system that will alert an emergency professional in the event of a fire (or other crisis). If you live in an assisted living facility or retirement community, ask about fire safety precautions and procedures and make sure you know how to react in the event of a fire.
