Northampton, MA (PRWEB) May 29, 2009 -- Alteris Renewables, the Northeast's premiere solar installer, today celebrates a ribbon cutting hosted by The Community Builders (TCB) and MassDevelopment at Hillside Place at Village Hill. Alteris installed a total of 43 kilowatts of solar electric power as part of the redevelopment housing project of the former state hospital complex, earning the site designation as a "sustainable community."
"It's great to be a part of this smart growth project in Northampton," said Ron French, president of Alteris Renewables, "Hillside Place represents what so many developments can and should be, including both cutting edge renewable energy technology and affordability of the units."
The eight separate solar electric systems, each under 10 kilowatts, feed either two or three bedroom units or common spaces for the affordable housing portion of Hillside Place. The Small Renewables Initiative of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative helped to fund the project.
"We're proud to say that the solar electric systems will help to defray the costs of utility bills for residents," explained French, "as well as reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as one million pounds over the course of twenty-five years."
Other green features of the site include super-insulated walls and ceilings and Energy Star rated heating equipment and appliances.
"Our test results during the ENERGY STAR Homes certification process show that the residents at Hillside Place will enjoy energy bills that are 50 - 60% less than typical homes built today in Massachusetts," said Peggy MacLeod, Director of Marketing for Green Building Services at the Center for Ecological Technology in Northampton. "This level of energy efficiency should be one for which all new home developers should strive."
