Skipping Travel Insurance Costs UK Tourists £90 Million

Post Office Travel Insurance research reveals almost a quarter of holidaymakers are still considering travelling without insurance in 2009

London, UK (PRWEB) May 31, 2009 -- A recent study has revealed that UK tourists that travelled abroad without travel insurance in 2008 lost a whopping £90 million through mishaps such as medical problems, lost baggage and cancelled flights. Yet almost a quarter of people are still considering going on holiday this year without travel insurance in order to save money, according to a Post Office Travel Insurance survey.

Whilst it is not uncommon for consumers to cut back on non-essential costs during a recession, it is a worry that some people believe skipping travel insurance is a risk worth taking during an economic squeeze. Huge numbers are affected by medical issues nowadays, so in times when money is tight it's more important than ever for people to ensure they have adequate travel insurance to avoid ending up seriously out of pocket should something go wrong.

Post Office head of Travel Insurance Rachel Croft said: "Paying out for medical costs with no insurance has never been cheap, but the weaker pound means that the relative cost of hospital treatment abroad can be potentially much higher.

"In addition to travel insurance, it's essential that people carry a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which offers free or reduced cost medical treatment in EU countries. However, the EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance so we urge people to ensure they are fully covered against all eventualities."
