Hollywood, CA (PRWEB) June 3, 2009 -- After a successful NY staged reading, author and journalist Penelope Karageorge brings the romantic comedy, "Drinking the Sun", to the west coast for a reading on June 28.
"Drinking the Sun" explodes Greek island clichés to take you inside a real world, circa 2009, of goats and TV antennas, gossip and sunsets, ancient ruins and new love. Sophia, a 30-something Greek-American, goes looking for love and roots on the Greek island of Lemnos. When a charismatic architect tries to buy her house and the entire village to create a "Disneyland on the Aegean," Sophia fights not only for the village but her own identity (despite the well-meaning counter-intentions of a cast of unforgettable characters).
It's a delicious new romantic comedy for the senses. Karageorge, a freelance journalist and author, a New Yorker who has lived on Lemnos, says: "Drinking isn't Mama Mia revisited. I love the exuberance of Mama Mia. It's really a trip! But it has little to do with a Greek island. I'm thinking more in terms of Zorba the Greek and Never on Sunday. This is Greek reality, vivid, sun-drenched, passionate and struggling to retain authenticity, while moving into an age of globalization and commercialization. Of course there's Greek music and dancing!"
Athan Karras, whose name is synonymous with Greek dance, directs. The reading is Sunday, June 28, 2 p.m.at the Pandreas Theatre, 5125 Melrose Ave. A reception follows. Due to limited seating, the reading is by invitation only. For more information, please contact Kerry (at) indieproducer net.
Karageorge's thriller script, The Neon Jungle, placed seventh out of more than 3,000 entries in the important Final Draft competition. She began her career at Newsweek magazine interviewing luminaries including Jane Fonda, Salvador Dali, Cary Grant, Bette Davis and Frank Sinatra. She has produced short films including the documentary, The Vanishing Typewriter, and neo-noir Fat Tuesday, and is the author of two novels, Murder at Tomorrow, and Stolen Moments.
