Chantilly, VA (PRWEB) June 2, 2009
To help combat the increasing number of cyber attacks, such as the recently reported attack on the U.S. Marshal's Service Network, Blue Ridge Networks today announced its Blue Ridge Federal Information Security Stimulus program. This program is designed to simplify the evaluation and purchase of Blue Ridge/Secure EdgeGuard, a policy-based endpoint security solution that reduces the risk of information security breaches by eliminating security vulnerabilities on fixed and mobile PCs. In addition to malware protection, EdgeGuard further reduces security risks by ensuring compliance with SDC and FDCC profiles for Windows workstations.
The U.S. Marshal's Service network was reportedly attacked by the Neeris worm which infects desktop systems and allows hackers to take control of systems using implanted malware. Neeris, which is rated "high" for its damage potential, is also capable of propagating across a host of networked resources including servers, removable media and instant messaging clients. The worm was able to penetrate desktop systems because the agency's anti-malware software was out-of-date and therefore ineffective.
"Secure EdgeGuard gives agencies the ability to increase their endpoint protection, monitor security policy compliance, automatically update out-of-compliance PCs, and provide digitally signed audit reports," stated Mike Fumai, CEO of Blue Ridge Networks. "As a long time provider of security solutions to government agencies, we wanted to broaden the availability of Secure EdgeGuard so we designed the Stimulus program to streamline the evaluation and purchase process."
Protect Endpoints from Virus and Zero-day Malware Attacks
Traditional anti-virus and anti-malware products that rely on known malware signatures are proving to be less effective against increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks. Unfortunately, cyber-criminals are now able to easily re-craft malware, altering signatures so they cannot be stopped by these legacy products.
Alternative solutions such as Host Intrusion Protection Systems (HIPS) prove to be cumbersome to manage and require PC users to make security decisions. As attacks become more and more sophisticated, companies need to add layers of security to improve protection. Users can unknowingly infect their systems by browsing hacked websites, opening infected email attachments, and using infected USB thumb-drives.
Blue Ridge/Secure EdgeGuard more than doubles protection from legacy antivirus and anti-malware products and eliminates the threat from zero-day malware without relying on signatures or complex configuration management.
Control Endpoint Security Policy Compliance On and Off Enterprise
PC security policies must be managed and enforced when computers are on and off the enterprise network. Many attacks are successful because a mobile PC user may have been running out-of-date virus protection or downloaded a software application that was not allowed under the security policy. When this user reconnects to the enterprise network, the implanted malware is able to infiltrate the network to steal data or simply wait for instructions from the attacker.
EdgeGuard is a policy-based security solution that enforces security policies regardless of the PCs location. It can prevent the user from running unapproved software and quarantine the PC from the network until its anti-virus software, or other programs including disk encryption and VPN, are up-to-date. EdgeGuard also enables custom policy assessment and enforcement scripting.
Audit and Report on Security Policy Compliance
Regular audits and reporting will help ensure that security policies are effective, are not a hindrance to employees and are in fact preventing cyber attacks. They can assist security personnel in defining security policies as well as provide information to justify new policies.
To support these requirements, EdgeGuard audit and reporting capabilities report on compliance and non-compliant activities of PC users whether they were on or off the enterprise network. And to meet the highest levels of security and compliance, EdgeGuard signs its events logs to facilitate irrefutable reporting.
