Roundtrip email monitoring verifies email performance to and from servers

Increased insight into email performance and having the ability to verify delivery not only gives network administrators greater assurance, it helps them plan proactively, optimize resources and process as well as reduce potential risks that can trigger outages.

Email is now the most pervasive form of business communication, with broad impact on nearly every aspect of an enterprise. Because it is often the sole method of communication in critical relationships such as prospects, customers and internal company communications, monitoring and maintaining the health of email servers is essential for business operations.

Paessler AG, a leading provider of network monitoring software for use on Windows systems, delivers new email performance monitoring capabilities in PRTG Network Monitor.

Dirk Paessler, CEO of Paessler AG notes "Increased insight into email performance and having the ability to verify delivery not only gives network administrators greater assurance, it helps them plan proactively, optimize resources and process as well as reduce potential risks that can trigger outages."

SMTP/POP3 and SMTP/IMAP Email Round Trip Sensors
Two dedicated email round-trip sensors monitor the availability of SMTP, POP and IMAP servers and perform round-trip email tests at regular intervals or on demand to ensure that both incoming and outgoing email services are working. If any problems are detected, alerts will be triggered and assigned administrative contacts are notified.

Compared to the standard SMTP, POP3 and IMAP sensors which only check the availability of these services, the new roundtrip email sensor types monitor the time it takes from accepting the mail on the first email server to delivery of the mail on the final POP3 or IMAP server. Performance data is collected and stored in PRTG, enabling network administrators to measure and report on email service levels in real time or over a period of time to identify trends.

PRTG Network Monitor is an all-in-one network monitoring solution which covers the complete range of monitoring needs from availability monitoring to bandwidth and usage monitoring, as well as email monitoring. PRTG installs easily on Windows XP, 2003, 2008 and can be quickly configured using an intuitive Ajax-based web interface. PRTG comes with preconfigured device templates including POP3 and IMAP sensors so that Email monitoring with auto discovery is set up and functioning within minutes. Network administrators can further expand email monitoring and delivery capabilities by using an additional sensor for Microsoft's Exchange Server.
