Students Convene for Youth Leadership Conference
Nearly 700 student leaders will convene in Washington, DC and other cities across the country this summer for Leadership University, a one-week youth leadership conference.
Washington, DC (PRWEB) June 5, 2009 -- This summer, nearly 700 teen leaders from across the United States met in Washington, DC and other cities for Leadership University, a one week youth leadership conference for middle and high school students.
Leadership University is an experiential learning program in which the student leaders engage in hands-on activities, simulations and workshops designed to help them develop essential leadership skills. Negotiation, team building and creative thinking are among the topics covered.
Leadership University is a youth leadership program that helps teens discover their leadership potential, assists them in creating a personal roadmap and action plan for their future, and emphasizes personal responsibility. Participants also develop practical tools they can use every day, including communication, public speaking, time management and conflict resolution. The Leadership Challenge ropes course rounds out the experience and gives students another environment in which to practice their leadership skills.
Jessica Cheuvront, a rising sophomore from Cantonsville, MD, is among the young leaders who attended last year's Leadership University. "I want to impact people's lives for the better," said Cheuvront. She feels that her experience at Leadership University will help her in working with groups and in public speaking. She added, "I want to fight as a representative of the people and get them more involved in the government."
Claudette Greene's daughter, Jody, attended Leadership University. She says, "Jody came home saturated with what she calls 'important life stuff.' She describes her experience with words like 'amazing', 'awesome', and 'everyone should do this'.
Two of Miichelle Witzel's teenagers attended Leadership University. "I was impressed by the professionalism and quality of the program and those who ran it," said Witzel. "My teens enjoyed themselves and already they are more outgoing and confident as a result of being with other like-minded teens."
Leadership University is open to students who have completed grades 6 -12. Applications are accepted at www.lead-america.org.
