Philadelphia PA (PRWEB) June 8, 2009
PTR Baler & Compactor provides and services recycling and waste reduction products to a wide range of business and industry including several major retail giants. The firm continues to identify areas to save costs while inspiring the support of employees, presenting a modern model in both efficiency and organization development.
PTR has grown an average of 13% per year over the last five years and continues to operate in Philadelphia's historic manufacturing center. A quick look around the building shows heritage of manufacturing going back many years. The company has been a proud fixture in the surrounding neighborhood adding many jobs to the local economy as well as getting involved in community events. PTR was a finalist last year for NAM's (National Association of Manufacturers) Sandy Trowbridge Award for outstanding service for the community.
"The core of our success depends on our ability to track workflow processes and the associated costs", states Joe Perillo Director of Supply Chain. "Most routine work processes include waste or non-value added steps which will grow as the organization grows and in some cases multiply at a faster rate adding hidden cost along with decreasing capacity. Lean Manufacturing examines in detail a system's current state to develop a process that excludes waste while installing controls to prevent any reoccurrence and support continuing improvement" Perillo explained.
"We capture the power of integrated data fundamental to uncover the waste, determine best practices, and control costs with our Datamatics systems. Their flexible leading-edge technology allows us to not only track time and attendance, but establish benchmarks for efficiency and best practices that we can use to identify areas that need attention," adds Perillo. Datamatics Management Services, Inc., based in Fords, NJ, provides tailored, integrated data management services.
"Datamatics has contributed to our success by being extremely responsive to client needs" acknowledged Joe Bennett, head of PTR's IT department. "For example, last year our servers went down - it may not have been long in actual hours, but to us any time we're off-line is critical. For the most part, the largest hardware and software companies did not have the sense of urgency at their front line support centers that we require. Of course, the stress level was quite high as our IT staff and vendors worked to get the systems back up as quickly as possible" commented Bennett. "We rely on our labor tracking system using Datamatics software: it was critical to get online quickly so as not to lose data. The Datamatics support staff immediately understood the urgent nature of our position and worked quickly to get us back up and running. Datamatics has a top-notch team to help no matter what the problem."
Director of Supply Chain, Joe Perillo wrapped up the conversation with the following example of how Lean theories have been applied at PTR: "A routine manufacturing process was analyzed by our employees using shop labor data detailing every process in the chain. When employees were asked how things could be done better, everyone offered suggestions. Their ideas were put to use and made the process much more efficient. We can maintain good relationships with our workers here because everything is transparent. They can see the data we pull from the Datamatics technology and understand the value of working together to create a cost-efficient product."
"Retaining our clients by providing outstanding service has always been our goal" explains Gary Fudala, Vice President of Manufacturing. "To accomplish this goal we constantly evolve processes to meet today's changing demands. We learned how to help ourselves save money and maintain our quality service even during difficult economic times."
