Meditrac has successfully tested its ambulatory Vertetrac Traction System, demonstrating a significant level of clinical improvement maintained in one-, six- and 12-month follow-up studies as published in the Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation. The Vertetrac was also recently recognized with a selected rehabilitation product award for 2009 at the Rehmedica exhibition in Poland.
"I've been a practicing orthopedic surgeon and researcher for more than 30 years, and the mixed results garnered from surgery and traditional traction left me dissatisfied," says Arieh Grober, MD, PhD, Founder, Meditrac, and Head, Meditrac Spinal Clinic. "I began to formulate a hypothesis about providing a viable alternative to these treatments; this led to my participation in the development of the Vertetrac."
Vertetrac is a dynamic frame corset that combines traction with a horizontal force to enable simultaneous three-dimensional treatment and decompression of a prolapsed intervertebral disc.
The study proved that the device's efficacy is further enhanced when combined with a regimen of walking. Walking while in a decompressed state promotes the movement of fluids through the disc, supplying more blood and oxygen and diminishing the damage to the nerve root and the cord.
Studies worldwide have found that 65-85% of all people will experience some form of back pain at some point during their lives, 5-10% will develop chronic low-back pain, and 2% become disabled. The cost of this is $20-50 billion in the United States alone.
"Research has already demonstrated that back surgery was no more effective than physical rehabilitation," continues Grober. "The study my colleagues and I published using the Vertetrac "Traction on the Move" concept clearly demonstrated the clinical superiority and cost effectiveness of our approach over other modalities currently employed."
