'Creating Opportunity from the Downturn' is Focus of NYHRPS Special Program, June 24, 2009
The financial recession has affected us all in ways large and small. Faced with hard times, it is more important than ever to build support and community. That's why, on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, the New York Human Resources Planning Society (NYHRPS) is offering a special two-and-a-half hour program titled "Creating Opportunity from the Downturn" in NYC. This event is designed to address a variety of needs related to this economic crisis: whether you are coping with the challenges of doing more with less within a corporation; have lost your job and are in transition; are considering entrepreneurial opportunities or want to figure out how to 'give back' to those in need.
New York, New York (PRWEB) June 16, 2009 -- Every company and business executive has learned more than a few lessons in adaptation and survival over the past nine months as the constant drumbeat of bad economic and jobs news has roiled markets and crushed earnings projections. That's why, On Wednesday, June 24, 2009, the New York Human Resources Planning Society (NYHRPS) is offering a special two-and-a-half hour program titled "Creating Opportunity from the Downturn."
"The financial recession has affected us all in ways large and small," said Marjorie Derven, member of the Board of NYHRPS. "Faced with hard times, it is more important than ever to build support and community. In this spirit, NYHRPS wishes to invite all of its members and non-members to join us for stimulating conversations about how to adapt, persevere and thrive in today's business climate."
Laura Mindek, President of NYHRPS said, "This event is part of a series of outreach efforts related to the downturn targeted for the Human Resources community. Our June 24 event is designed to address a variety of needs related to this economic crisis: whether you are coping with the challenges of doing more with less within a corporation; have lost your job and are in transition; are considering entrepreneurial opportunities or want to figure out how to 'give back' to those in need."
The keynote speaker for the event is Margot Morrell, best-selling author and leadership expert. Ms. Morrell will discuss ways to successfully navigate today's challenges, based on her book, "Shackleton's Way: Leadership Lessons from the Great Antarctic Explorer." Through this historic adventure story, Ms. Morrell will illustrate enduring insights about the importance of goals, optimism and resilience in the face of seemingly impossible obstacles.
The late afternoon session, which runs from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm, will feature informative breakout sessions so that participants can engage in small group discussions in their choice of two of the following sessions.
HR's Value: If not in challenging times, then when? Facilitated discussion presented by Angelica Cantlon, SVP, MetLife and Eric W. Speer, Managing Director, Towers Perrin.
Finding Business Opportunities: Lynn Parramore, Co-founder, RecessionWire.com, will lead a discussion on finding creative solutions and business opportunities. A website dedicated to "The Upside of the Downturn," RecessionWire chronicles the economic crisis and "Lemonade Makers"-- individuals who have found ways to succeed despite the financial crisis.
How to Reinvent Yourself: Joan Cox, Vice President from Right Management, will present best practices for conducting a job search in today's job market.
Becoming a Social Entrepreneur: Thomas Lyons, Ph.D., Professor of Management, Baruch College, will lead a conversation about how to use your skills to build an enterprise that benefits society based on a social or environmental mission.
Personal Applications of Shackleton's Leadership Lessons, facilitated by Michele Phillips of Key Seminars.

This program is in addition to the regular calendar of events schedule. There will be a $25 charge for members and a $75 charge for non-members. Non-members who attend the event and join NYHRPS at the same time can apply the event fee to annual membership dues of $250.
