Marine Military Academy (MMA), located in southern Texas on the Gulf Coast of the United States -- just 40 miles from beautiful South Padre Island -- is now enrolling for this year's one-of-a-kind, four week ESL Summer Camp session. The Camp begins Saturday, July 11th, and wraps up on Saturday, August 8th, with Graduation.

Throughout the four week ESL program young men (ages 13-17) from all over the globe are challenged daily within this intensive total immersion experience. During the day, students attend ESL classes taught by MMA Foreign Language, English, and Math teachers. They learn to speak, read, and write contemporary American English - even give an illustrated presentation to their group...all in English! Focus is on practical vocabulary needed to study subjects offered at MMA during the regular academic year. Weekly proficiency exams are utilized to track each student's progress. Ultimately, students are challenged to complete a project utilizing their newfound English skills. Last summer ESL students were issued toy rocket kits with construction instructions entirely in English. At the conclusion of the project, the properly constructed rockets were ignited...and 100% of the ESL students' rockets fired and took flight.

After school, the student participates in the same kinds of activities enjoyed by campers attending MMA's simultaneously conducted summer camp, where the focus is on sports and physical fitness within a leadership/adventure challenge training environment. For the ESL student, field trips to cultural and sports events and local points of interest provide ample opportunity for the student to practice using English in the 'real world'. The most-accomplished students from the group are invited to apply to MMA for the academic year.

The ESL program is open to students globally at all levels of English proficiency. Some students find it useful to return for a second summer. Since the program uses only English, native speakers of any language can benefit.

For further information or to download an application, visit MMA's website or contact MMA's Admissions staff at (956) 421-9252. To speak to Spanish-speaking representatives, contact GySgt Adrian Arranaga (956) 421-9271 or Mrs. Lupe Longoria (956) 421-9252. Applications for camp admission are accepted until the camp is full. The total cost for ESL 2009 is $3,750 and includes application fee, uniforms, room, board and activities.

MMA is also a one-of-a-kind college preparatory boarding and U.S. Marine Corps military-styled academy for young men 13-17 years of age, with one year optional postgraduate study. The school was founded in 1963 by William A. Gary, rancher and retired U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Reserve Captain, who believed USMC concepts of leadership and discipline are adaptable to prep school education. In 1965, he and a group of retired Marines opened the school in Harlingen, TX on a 142-acre site of a former Air Force navigation school. The goals for personal excellence extend through academics, athletics/physical activities, moral and other personal endeavors. This year there were approximately 300 cadets enrolled in grades 8 through 12 with one year available for postgraduate study. Cadets in the 2008-2009 academic year originated from 26 different states and Australia, China, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Taiwan, and United Kingdom.
