Alabama K-12 School District Switches to OpenDNS, Meets CIPA Requirements and Keeps Kids Safe Online

Butler County Board of Education Makes Internet Safer for 4,000 Students and Faculty With OpenDNS

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 25, 2009 -- OpenDNS, provider of the award-winning service that makes the Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced Butler County Board of Education uses OpenDNS to keep students safe from malicious online material. The Board, which provides services to all schools in Butler County, Alabama, keeps nearly 4,000 students and school staff personnel protected with OpenDNS' content filtering and anti-phishing services. OpenDNS, the world's largest and fastest-growing DNS provider, is today used by more than 20,000 schools, including some of the nation's largest school districts.

Like all K-12 school districts, Butler County Board of Education is required to adhere to federal Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) guidelines, and chose OpenDNS as its first line of defense. The law addresses concerns about access to offensive content over the Internet on school and library computers. Implementing OpenDNS helps K-12 schools like those in Butler County meet the strict guidelines CIPA enforces.

"Content filtering is very high on our priority list because of CIPA requirements," said Matthew Shell, Director of Technology at Butler County Board of Education. "Children are naturally curious and can get around other filtering methods. OpenDNS gives us the added layer of filtering needed to protect students from inappropriate content and Internet threats."

Shell says OpenDNS was the obvious choice in keeping the schools' networks safe, secure and reliable. The Director of Technology would highly recommend OpenDNS to other IT professionals looking for the best online security available.

"OpenDNS plays a very important role for us," says Shell. "It gives us another layer of filtering capability at no cost, it gives us visibility into our traffic patterns, and it helps protect us from malware threats."
