Equine Obesity is Associated with Significant Health Issues, Including Insulin Resistance and Laminitis

Vet-A-Mix announces the release of an optimal nutritional supplement to support overall health and laminitis prevention for at-risk horses.

Shenandoah, IA (PRWEB) June 24, 2009 -- Equine obesity is on the rise in the United States. A large percentage of these horses are insulin resistant, and as such are at a higher risk for laminitis: a debilitating condition responsible for thousands of deaths each year. According to the USDA National Health Monitoring System, laminitis is the second most common reason for horses and ponies to present for veterinary care, yet 50% of these episodes can be prevented with effective nutritional management.

Vet-A-Mix, a Division of LLOYD, Inc. has recently introduced a simple and highly palatable solution for optimal dietary management of at-risk horses. The formula was developed in accordance to the Equine Cushing's and Insulin Resistance Group recommendations, and provides a complete, readily absorbable balance of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fatty acids ideal for the grass hay fed horse. Eleanor Kellon, VMD, a recognized expert in the field of horse nutrition, was instrumental in the final preparation. "We have found that careful attention to mineral balance and antioxidant nutrients in addition to controlled simple carbohydrates is both the safest and surest way to improve insulin resistance, control inflammation and regrow healthy hoof tissues." As the principal at Equine Nutritional Solutions (Ephrata, PA) and co-owner of the Equine Cushing's and Insulin Resistance Group Dr. Kellon consistently promotes properly balanced nutritional support, along with reduction in non-structural carbohydrates and increased exercise for these horses. "We are pleased to introduce Target IRTM to veterinarians and owners struggling to optimize the health of insulin resistant equids" states W. Eugene Lloyd, DVM, PhD, DABVT and CEO of LLOYD, Inc. "This clinically-validated formulation is poised to play a key role in helping to prevent laminitis and improving the quality and longevity of these horses."
