Babylon, Long Island in the Spotlight of Off-Broadway
The critically acclaimed one-man show Back to Babylon will have its Off-Broadway debut at the Players Theatre in New York City, July 10-19, 2009. The show is a humorous and poignant trip down suburban memory lane in the 1970's, revolving around a close-knit circle of Long Island teens and townies. Written, performed and directed by Gregg Tomé.
West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) June 24, 2009 -- The critically acclaimed one-man show Back to Babylon written and performed by Gregg Tomé, will have its Off-Broadway debut at the Players Theatre in New York City, July 10-12 and 17-19, 2009.
Back to Babylon is a humorous and poignant trip down suburban memory lane in the 1970's. The story revolves around a close-knit circle of Long Island townies struggling to define themselves within a haze of youthful revelry, while heading toward a tragic event that forever connects them to each other and their town.
The play has its roots in Long Island through its locale, but its universal themes make it much more than a provincial story. Backstage.com wrote "The show holds the attention of non-Long Islanders for (its) unmistakable authenticity." The Palm Beach Post said, "Tomé weaves a tale of the underbelly of Americana and displays a chameleon-like ability to transform himself."
Back to Babylon has a lengthy show history and praising reviews from Los Angeles to South Florida to New York City. It has been produced at theaters across the U.S. including Theatre at the Improv, First Stage, and The Space in Hollywood, CA; PS 122, at the New York City Fringe Festival; Cuillo Center for the Performing Arts and Theatre West in West Palm Beach, FL; and the Boulton Center for Performing Arts, LI.
When the show was performed in the New York City Fringe Festival a few years ago NewYorkTheater.com wrote that it "may very well be the finest show in FringeNYC this year," and that Tome's performance was "remarkable - I could of sworn there were nine actors on stage."
Comparing Tomé with some of the most well known writers of our time, the New Times, Miami wrote, "Woody Allen has Manhattan, Neil Simon has Yonkers and Gregg Tome has Babylon, Long Island."
For any original stage play, especially one that has been a solo effort (not only written and performed by Gregg Tome, but also self-directed and usually self-produced in the past) getting to the Off-Broadway level of theater is a significant accomplishment, and one that Tomé relishes.
Tomé says, "It has been a long time coming! I put everything I have into this piece for years with performing, revising the script, fine-tuning, adding multi-media elements and performing again. Now that work is finally paying off with an Off-Broadway run."
