T3i Group Study Says Vendor/Service Provider Strategies Drive FMC Adoption in Slow Economic Environment

Before the recession, FMC was set to be the next big cost-saving telecom application for global enterprises and SMBs. T3i survey results show that while the pace of adoption has slowed, end users still perceive benefits from FMC products and services now on the market.

Parsippany, NJ (PRWEB) June 25, 2009 -- T3i Group's newest InfoTrack for Enterprise Services (IES) report, "The State of Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) in the Workplace," found that more than half of T3i Group's international enterprise and small and medium-sized business (SMB) survey-panel respondents either have implemented FMC, are in the process of deploying a program or are conducting trials.

T3i Group regularly conducts research with a 10,000-member panel, most of whom are C-level and/or IT decision makers, regarding their plans to deploy emerging unified-communications technologies solutions and services. For this report, T3i Group also interviewed executives from leading FMC vendors and service providers to understand their strategies and outlooks for the FMC market.

Before the recession, FMC was set to be the next big cost-saving telecom application for global enterprises and SMBs. T3i survey results show that while the pace of adoption has slowed, end users still perceive benefits from FMC products and services now on the market. Part of the continued interest in FMC derives from the ways vendors and service providers have adapted their sales strategies in the face of today's economic environment.

"For all markets, FMC vendors must concentrate on the substitution of landline minutes (either VoIP or telco, which essentially are unlimited), for wireless minutes whenever possible," commented Susan Hobart, President of T3i Group. "FMC vendors pursuing an international market must craft and, in many cases, re-craft the least-cost-routing features of their offerings to reflect the realities of tariffs outside of the United States."

Here are some of the study's significant findings:

  • Among nine applications features, survey respondents indicated their top priority is to have secure mobile-device features and functionality, both on and off premises.
  • Dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi phones are the devices of choice for most companies adopting FMC. However, Wi-Fi-only devices are preferred when FMC is deployed only as a campus system.
  • FMC is slightly more appealing to enterprise users and to U.S. users rather than to international companies, even though international customers are an easier sell. The report also segments FMC's attractiveness by vertical markets.
  • The top FMC vendors recognized by or used by T3i Group's survey respondents include Microsoft (even though it has no standalone FMC offering), Cisco, Avaya, Nortel, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia-Siemens.
