Homeschoolers Graduate from Laurel Springs School and Head to Prestigious Colleges and Universities

248 Distance learning homeschoolers celebrate graduation, prom, and acceptance to prestigious colleges and universities

Ojai, CA (Vocus/PRWEB ) June 26, 2009 -- Laurel Springs School, the accredited, college prep distance learning high school, congratulates the Class of 2009 by hosting a “real time” prom and graduation ceremony for its online high school students. Many Laurel Springs graduating seniors received early acceptance and scholarships to prestigious colleges and universities.

Laurel Springs School is the only private college prep high school where students actually gather in real time to celebrate the culmination of their senior year with a prom and graduation ceremony. “This year we will have 248 seniors graduate from the leading college prep online high school. Over the past five years, our graduates have received more than $5,000,000 in college scholarships. 2009 is another great year, with students being awarded full scholarships to prominent universities such as Stanford, Columbia, Dartmouth, the University of Edinburgh, and Northwestern University,” said Marilyn Mosley Gordanier, founder and executive director of the school.

The graduation weekend festivities are held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Ventura, California, beginning Friday night with the semi-formal “Arabian Paradise Prom” for all Laurel Springs high school students. Graduation is held on Sunday, June 28, with students attending from as far away as Florida, North Carolina, and New York. Laurel Springs is the only distance learning high school that has a chapter of the National Honor Society. Students accepted to the National Honor Society will proudly wear gold ribbons to signify membership.

Graduation ceremony talent includes performances by seniors DeShawn and DeAndre Jones of the group 3D, and senior Jewel Restaneo and her sister, Blaire, a 9th grader at Laurel Springs. Jewel and Blaire are multi-talented singers, musicians, songwriters, screenwriters, and actresses.

Members of the Laurel Springs Class of 2009 have received early acceptance, and some have received scholarships to Brown University, Columbia University, Dartmouth University, Goucher College, Hampshire College, Northwestern University, Stanford, Vassar, New York University (NYU), UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UCLA, USC, and the University of Edinburgh, UK. Most notable this year is the tennis scholarship of more than $100,000 to Northwestern University awarded to Laurel Springs honors student, Spencer Wolf.

Laurel Springs School graduates also plan to attend: USC, University of Arizona, UC Santa Barbara, and many state universities and community colleges. Laurel Springs School is known for its support of students in the arts and some Class of 2009 graduates will pursue their liberal arts education at the prestigious California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), California College of Music, Art Institute of California, The New School, and the San Francisco Ballet. Many Laurel Springs graduates are already working professionally as actors, entertainers, and athletes, and will continue to pursue their professions and competitive sports. “As a competitive ice skater it would have been impossible to be good at both school, and competing. I have traveled to Europe three years in a row to compete, and my school work was easy to keep up with,” said graduating senior, Aubrey Clifford.

Melissa Marie McDonald, a graduate and accomplished global ambassador who has traveled around the country promoting peace and goodwill, said, “Laurel Springs allowed me the flexibility of travel and the ability to pursue further academic opportunities concurrently. I was able to refine my academic résumé while studying in another country, fulfilling the qualifications needed for the competitive university programs I applied for. I’ve been able to pursue and receive credit for my study of music as well, giving me a more well-rounded profile. Thanks to Laurel Springs, I have been able to achieve my goals academically and culturally, which wouldn’t have been possible had I attended a typical high school.”

“Laurel Springs believes young people can ‘live the life they dreamed of right now’ and prepare for life after high school. I’ve worked with homeschool families for more than 35 years, and year after year, I’ve found our students are happy, healthy, participating members of society, excited by learning, and eager to contribute to the world around them. Congratulations to the Class of 2009 as they join the highest caliber of homeschool alumni,” said Mosley Gordanier.
