The US Drug Watchdog Expands its Zicam Investigation and Wants to Hear From All Users Who Lost Their Sense of Smell

According to the US Drug Watchdog, "we want to hear from any Zicam Nasal Gel or Zicam Nasal Swab user who has lost their sense of smell." The group says, "on June 16, 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advised consumers to stop using products marketed over-the-counter as cold remedies because they are associated with the loss of sense of smell (anosmia). Anosmia may be long-lasting or permanent. The products include: Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs and Zicam Cold Remedy. Two days later the maker of Zicam admitted they forgot to tell the FDA about 800+ complaints about the product. Americas Watchdog's US Drug Watchdog says it is "expanding its state by state and national investigations of consumers who have lost their sense of smell and/or taste after using Zicam Nasal Gel or Zicam Nasal Swabs. The group says, "we have a really big problem out here. Zicam nasal gel and Zicam nasal swabs have been associated with loss of smell or taste. We also have the problem that after denying there was a problem the manufacturer of Zicam admitted to the FDA that there had been 800 complaints about the products."
