LifeCare Offers 10 Tips for Effective Emergency Planning

This release shares tips for helping families better prepare for all kinds of emergency situations.

Shelton, CT (PRWEB) June 30, 2009 -— In recognition of July's designation as Bioterrorism / Disaster Education and Awareness Month, LifeCare®, Inc., a leading provider of health and productivity solutions to employers nationwide, is issuing the following "10 Tips for Effective Emergency Planning" to help families better prepare for emergency situations of all kinds.

1. Learn about potential disasters that could occur in your local area and the emergency notification systems in place to warn you. Begin by calling your local Emergency Management Office or Red Cross chapter.
2. Instruct family members to turn on the radio for emergency information and where to tune for this information.
3. Post emergency numbers (police, fire department, etc.) near all telephones. Teach children how to make calls to emergency services providers as well as long distance calls.
4. Pick one out-of-state and one local friend or relative to call if your family is separated by disaster. (Remember, it's often easier to call out of state than within your affected area).
5. Draw a floor plan of your home, highlighting escape routes. Practice using these routes with all family members from time to time.
6. Designate a place near your home where all family members should meet in the event of a disaster. Also select one place outside of your neighborhood for cases when you cannot return home or it is not safe to do so.
7. Learn how to turn off the main switches for water, gas and electricity in your home in case you need to evacuate.
8. Discuss what to do about power outages and personal injuries.
9. Keep important family papers in a waterproof/fireproof container.
10. Take basic first aid and CPR classes.

Also, remember to talk to children and/or elderly loved ones occasionally about the dangers of fire, earthquakes, severe weather and other emergencies. And if you have children, grandchildren or older loved ones in care facilities during the day, learn about the facilities' emergency plans so you can plan and act accordingly.
