An internal Merck white paper (released by the FDA) associates the use of Fosamax with the development of Osteonecrosis of the Jaw or 'Dead Jaw' - a serious and possibly irreversible deterioration of the jaw. The Merck white paper says: Osteonecrosis of the jaw, generally associated with tooth extraction and/or local infection, often with delayed healing, has been reported in patients taking bisphosphonates. Common symptoms of this disorder are: pain in the jaw (pain similar to arthritis), a numb sensation in the mouth or jaw, infection of the gums, loosening teeth, and exposed bone in the mouth. It also can cause a broken femur to fail to heal.
