The report includes findings regarding demographics and printer usage; print applications and features; color use in the office; user perception and preferences regarding ink jet and laser devices; printer purchase intentions, preferences and channels; and supplies usage and purchase levels.

Specifically, the report's findings are based on the following:

a survey of printer users and others responsible for purchasing printer hardware and supplies;

responses from a total of 847 survey participants;

analysis of offices ranging in size from micro (1-9 employees) and small (10-99 employees) to medium-size (100+ employees); and

feedback from participants covering the spectrum of NAICS categories, including agriculture, construction, education, finance, manufacturing, real estate, and retail trade, among others.

Larry Jamieson, director of Lyra's Hard Copy Industry Advisory Service, commented, "This report was prepared with decision makers at printer, copier, and supplies companies in mind. It provides key analysis to help them gain a more keen understanding of printing behavior among SMBs in the United States and the available market opportunities. It delivers insight into printer usage and preferences, as well as the effects of recent changes in the printing market, including the economy, environmental concerns, and WiFi implementations."

Insight into How Environmental Concerns Have Impacted SMB Printer Usage in the United States
Lyra's survey of SMBs in the United States reveals that many of these businesses are becoming more concerned about environmental issues. Thirty-five percent of SMBs indicated that environmental policies will have an effect on the amount of output they print.

The survey also uncovered a few methods that companies are employing in an effort to be greener.

SMBs use recycled paper. When asked about their use of specialty media, the combined respondents ranked recycled paper the highest of all specialty media used, at 3.76 on a Likert scale of 1 to 5 (5 = very important and 1 = not important), while the medium-size businesses rated recycled paper at 4.03.

About 66 percent of SMBs said they recycle printer cartridges, and only 12 percent said they throw away cartridges.

In terms of output and document-management features and functions, small businesses ranked duplex printing relatively low. However, the use of duplex printing increased according to business size. As more vendors add the duplex feature to lower-end devices, ratings for this feature will likely increase.
