Ecogear Canada launches its newest tee shirt today and expects controversy from it.

In doing so, it has clearly stated where the company stands on the issue of animal rights and animal cruelty.

"It was a statement that we had to make. We as a species cause so much pain and suffering to other species that something had to be said about the issues." Said Robert Hii, founder of the Ecogear brand in Canada.

In a slight departure from the company's series of Special tee shirts, which have dedicated beneficiaries for each particular shirt, this one is being launched as a fundraising tool for animals rights groups in North America and the company has made a selection of animal rights groups in California, Florida, Texas, New York and in the Canadian provinces of Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta. The selected groups were groups that the company had actively supported in previous campaigns.

"We welcome any other animal rights groups to use these simple tee shirts as a way to fundraise. All they have to do is agree with the statement that we're making on the tee shirt." And the message is gritty. In a simple black and white graphic, it shows a monkey behind a chain link fence looking out on the message " not where I belong"

"This shirt speaks for every animal in a research lab, for every exotic animal in a roadside zoo or even permanent zoos themselves" said Robert Hii."The permanent zoos can be a wonderful place to educate and entertain and we expect them to be the final frontiers for the preservation of endangered species but to keep an elephant or a gorilla in a cage, regardless of the enclosure's size, is just wrong. As far as vivisection and the use of animals for medical advancement is concerned, I'd say we have enough drugs already to prevent or cure most illnesses but our main point is that testing on animals is irrelevant. I personally experienced the horrible effects of a cholesterol medicine recently and as I complained to the doctor about the fatigue, weakness of legs and confusion, I wondered if the animals that were tested in the development of this drug, were able to convey those effects to the researchers."

In related news, the company is set to launch tee shirts to support the efforts of the Orangutan Land Trust to secure safe haven for orangutans in Indonesia.
