When envisioning the blueprint for the new oceanfront Allegria Hotel & Spa, which debuts in July 2009, acclaimed designer Tonny Sadha was intent on bringing the beach indoors. Located less than 30 miles from Manhattan, the oceanfront property will remain aware of its urban surroundings with stunning roof-top views of the New York City skyline, but will also become an extension of the neighboring surf and sand.
For Allegria Hotel & Spa, Allen Rosenberg, Owner and President of The Alrose Group, the property's developer, decided on New York-based Tonny Sadha who he believed shared the same vision for the property. It was important for Rosenberg to capture the nuances of the seaside environment on the interior to create a peaceful retreat for guests. Sadha says, "We decided to create a beach that has a hotel, not a hotel that has a beach."
Sadha, whose previous projects have included Hotel Ravel in New York City and Raflles, The Plaza in Singapore among others, believes in creating timeless spaces that harmoniously weave drama, fantasy, function and comfort. With Allegria, Sadha designs a classic contemporary structure that borrows cues from the ocean and the adjacent boardwalk. Classical proportions and modern notions will be maintained throughout but almost every space of the hotel will be injected with reminders of marine life. Sadha will marry aesthetics with nature, using materials like limestone and wood, and an earthen color palette, as well as a spectrum of blues to accentuate the sea.
When entering the hotel, references to the ocean will immediately be recognized. Apart from a glass-walled lobby, a glass staircase that leads to the adjoining boardwalk will be filled with water so when climbing the steps there will be a notion of walking on water. Lobby ceilings will be polished to give an illusion of height and its seating area is equipped with cocoon-like lounge bed and various sculptural light fixtures.
Sadha will transform guestrooms and suites into intimate but spacious havens. An assortment of materials will be layered and juxtaposed against white upholstered walls, making for an airy feel, while oceanfront rooms will be complete with Juliet balconies to let in refreshing, coastal breezes. Function will be of importance as well, as guestrooms will feature a sizeable and unique closet separating bed from bath and fitted with sliding doors to enable guests to access it from both areas. For those accommodations facing the water, guests will get a glimpse of the glorious ocean from the bathroom when opening the closet, demonstrating that the external environment will, once again, be taken into consideration.
Each of the 31 suites will feature a multitude of windows and a quaint yet luxurious living and dining area, mirroring a summer cottage so guests will be able to enjoy the feeling of a year-long vacation getaway. The bathrooms in these superior accommodations will be finished in a smooth, polished limestone and equipped with five fixtures, including separate bathtub and spa shower, and an LCD TV embedded behind a vanity mirror and double sinks. The top three suites will be named after each of Rosenberg's children - Jade, Gaelyn and Grant.
When entering the hotel's signature restaurant, Atlantica, small pockets of tables will be scattered throughout creating a space within a space for a more intimate dining experience. Beach themes will also be abound in Atlantica with a floor crafted entirely of wide wooden planks to mimic the boardwalk, and the floor-to-ceiling French doors that open to the boardwalk will provide guests with a sense of dining al fresco.
To create an underwater experience, color changing fiber-optic light fixtures that resemble jellyfish will float overhead, and framed mirrors on the walls will reflect the sea to add depth and dimension and give diners a view of the ocean from various seating. The adjacent L'Onda lounge will be entirely encompassed by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the shore. It will also contain a double-sided fireplace and circular bar fitted with glass mosaic to achieve assorted points of view. Additionally, a private wine cellar and dining room will be available, featuring an exclusive chef's table which allows seating for 16 to 18 guests.
The ballroom will seat up to 200 people and the details have been conceived to manipulate perception as well. This will be evident in the multiple lengths drum shade light fixtures that hang from varying heights, and the three-dimensional mural composed of velvet boxes mounted on different levels and producing a shimmery effect. The ballroom will be offered for special events or corporate gatherings, and business guests will also be given the opportunity to use one of the three breakout meeting rooms located on the third floor.
From the faint silhouettes of seagulls in the walls to the other marine-inspired motifs that will gently infiltrate the property, guests will be sure to find surprises around every corner when visiting Allegria Hotel & Spa, and such is the case with the private entrance to the beach. A tunnel will run from the street level of the hotel to the sand and will be completely enclosed in foliage to provide visitors with the impression of entering a lush garden.
