Utility Rates Soar, Homeowners Switch to Solar Power

Share Article

As utility rates continue to rise, more and more homeowners across the nation are installing photovoltaic solar systems on their homes to save money on their electric bill. Solar electric, once thought to be a luxury, has seen prices steadily decline over the past year making going solar more affordable than ever.

UMA Solar and its network of over 700 dealers nationwide are leading the charge to make solar power affordable for homeowners. SolarTrek, a UMA Solar dealer, recently installed a MyGen Solar Electric system on Ken Bull's home in Ocala, Florida. "The price for energy will only continue to go up," said Bull. "With solar I can control the cost now, and in the future. This system provides me with some independence from the power company."

Ken Bull's views are also shared by Attorney General Bill McCollum. Regarding a recent proposed $1.3 billion rate increase by Florida Power & Light (FP&L), McCollum stated, "This proposed rate increase is excessive, especially when homeowners are already struggling to make ends meet… While the economy is affecting power companies, the difference should not be made up entirely at the expense of Floridians' wallets."

In response to these rate increases, Kyocera and UMA Solar have collaborated to distribute an all-inclusive solar electric kit that includes all components necessary for solar contractors to install. Contractors can follow easy step-by-step instructions, lowering the labor expenses needed to install the systems. These kits make solar electricity more widely available and cost effective for homeowners.

"There are many reasons to go solar, but the main reason for me was economic," said Bull. "With the sun always shining in Florida and all the rebates being given, you would be foolish not to think solar."
The MyGen solar electric kits are available in Northern Florida by SolarTrek (http://gosolartrek.com), or nationwide by an authorized UMA Solar dealer (http://umasolar.com).
